Cotton production in Pakistan showing 7 pc increase in volume

The Pakistan's cotton arrival trends during last fortnight, showing above the market expectations, at least 422,738 cotton bales of 160 kilograms each reached ginning factories during the last fortnight, as per the industry data showed on Wednesday.

According to a consolidated statement of cotton arrivals in factories around the country till January 1, total cotton arrival at ginning stage has so far reached at 11.108 million bales, a seven percent increase in volume compared with the same period a year ago.

The Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) demanded the government to impose complete ban on cotton imports from India as PCGA leaders strongly feel that imports of cotton lint from India via Wahag Border is detrimental to the interests of the cotton growers, it will ruin cotton growing and growers in Pakistan hence should be immediately stopped.

Pakistan government revises cotton output target by 10.26 percent to 12.60 million bales for the current season of 2017/18 over an earlier target of 14.04 million bales as the country’s biggest crop producer Punjab fell short of targeted cultivation area for the current year as it was missed by 11.4 percent compared with the official target, which would translate into 12 percent drop in production. Water shortage was attributed as a main reason behind low acreage, officials said on Thursday.

The Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association has urged the government revision of tax slabs package to be included in the special relief package for the ginning sector, as they will be unable to run factories in the next season of 2017-18 due to burden of taxes and other crisis.

PCGA chairman Dr Jeso Mal demanded incentives-oriented package for the ginning sector as textile industry was the only buyer of cotton in the market and there was no other buyer in the country.

The PCGA chairman said that the ginning sector should be declared tax-free industry at least for three years.

Pakistan’s current cotton output of 10.727m bales showing a slight increase of 9.81 percent from last season’s 9.766m bales. This is for the second consecutive season, the country has produced more than 10 million cotton bales.

With lesser area coming under cotton cultivation, the crop size has been shrinking — from 15m bales recorded in cotton season 2013-14 to round 10m bales for the last two seasons.

The fortnightly (April 1-15) phutti (seed cotton) arrivals data of the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association show improvement in cotton production in Punjab.

Pakistan’s cotton production has increased 9.99 percent reached 10.722 million bales until March 15, 2017, over the same period last year. According to report from Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), out of the total arrivals, cottonseed (Phutti) to the tune of 10,722,328 bales has undergone the ginning process.

Arrivals in Punjab ginneries were recorded at 6.9 million or 6,935,370 bales, growing by 15.92 percent compared to the corresponding period last year.

Cotton arrival in the local markets witnessed year-on-year 10.63 percent increase to 10.634 million bales, according to the Pakistan Cotton Ginners’ Association.

Around 9.717 million cotton bales were so far sold in the local markets as against 8.390 million bales a year ago. Local crop arrival increased in
February as compared to the last year despite torrential rains and flash floods in some cotton growing areas in the country.

With Pakistan’s cotton sowing remaining 25 percent lower this year compared to the last year, its cotton production likely to face a shortage of around 2.5 million cotton bales during current year, said Girdhari Lal of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association.

Girdhari Lal further said that with country’s cotton demand hovers around 14 million bales while the production estimated at a little above 11 million bales. According to their estimates, around 2.5 million bales would need to be imported.

Pakistan cotton market due to short supply of quality lint witnessed overnight gain in cotton price on Saturday. In the ready business, around 13,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 5100 and Rs 5500. The official spot rate maintained rising trend for the second day, gaining further Rs 50 more at Rs 5,300, dealers said.

While, in Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2000-2200, and Punjab prices at Rs 2500 and Rs 2900.

Pakistan Cotton Ginners’ Association (PCGA) data shows that cotton production plunged 34.07 percent to 9.748 million bales up till March 15 of the current season from 14.785 million bales a year ago due to untimely heavy rains, substandard pesticides and poor quality seeds.

A shortfall in the cotton crop continued to worsen this season in the cotton growing areas of Punjab and Sindh.
