Indonesian TPT industry export touches $7 bn in first half of 2017

Indonesian government to improve competitiveness and productivity in the national textile and textile industry (TPT) is working to facilitate logistical access and strengthen local branding. Minister of Industry, Airlangga Hartarto said that currently, their textile industry is already integrated, 90 percent already produced domestically. Therefore, the increase of added value in Indonesia is also important to meet the domestic market, in addition to exports.

The Indonesian Government is planning to ease import procedures to improve the competitiveness of local businesses with regional competitors like Vietnam, which has no import tariff, as opposed to Indonesia’s fees of 5-20 percent.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo instructed the relevant ministries for the same in a limited Cabinet meeting. He said that the import procedures must be simplified for Textile and textile product (TPT) raw materials to lift the burden off businesses

Jokowi said the TPT industry was in need of immediate revitalization to push further industrialization.

The Indonesian government has introduced a third stimulus package stipulates that industrial activities get electricity price cuts from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. However, the textile industry and the state electricity company PLN, which supplies the power, interpret the stipulation differently.

Based on PLN’s understanding, the price cut will only be given to companies consuming more than they usually do every day. The textile industry, meanwhile, says the price cut should be given to industrial activities during the specified timeframe regardless of the amount of their power consumption.

Conference held in Addis Ababa to raise Ethiopian Textile and Garment Industry

A conference to promote Ethiopia's Textile and Garment Industry kicked off in Hilton Hotel, Addis Ababa on 8 February, 2016 under the theme "Towards Increasing Sustainability and Competitiveness in Ethiopia's textile and garment industry.

The conference aims to help improve the competitiveness of the Ethiopian textile and garment industry as contributor to sustainable employment generation and economic development of the country and is expected to promote awareness on the importance of social and environmental standards.

Thailand, Vietnam garment and textile industries need to strengthen co-operation

Thailand and Vietnam garment and textile industries to improve competitiveness and exploit the ASEAN market need to strengthen co-operation. Establishing fully vertical integrated-supply chain between Thailand and Vietnam would be one of the big steps toward granting and sustaining competitiveness.

Nguyen Van Tuan, deputy general secretary of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, said that in recent years Vietnam has emerged as a production hub for garment and textile products. However, the industry has had to import up to 85% of materials needed for production.

The World Trade Organization and the United Nations mandated the International Trade Centre (ITC) to design and implement a five years projects called Supporting Indian Trade and Investment for Africa (SITA) to improve competitiveness of five east African countries through linkages with Indian companies.

The $20 million India-East Africa trade and investment improving projects, aims to boost business between the two sides on selected sectors.
