Indonesian government to improve competitiveness and productivity in the national textile and textile industry (TPT) is working to facilitate logistical access and strengthen local branding. Minister of Industry, Airlangga Hartarto said that currently, their textile industry is already integrated, 90 percent already produced domestically. Therefore, the increase of added value in Indonesia is also important to meet the domestic market, in addition to exports.

The Indonesian government is seeking a bilateral agreement with the United States to boost its volume of textile exports. As currently, the US imposes a 12.5 percent import duty for their textiles, while it imposes zero percent for Vietnamese textiles because they already have a bilateral agreement, said Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto in Jakarta on Thursday.

Recently, a commercial dialogue--a forum has also been established that encourages the private sector to explore investment and trade opportunities in both countries.

The Indonesian Government is planning to ease import procedures to improve the competitiveness of local businesses with regional competitors like Vietnam, which has no import tariff, as opposed to Indonesia’s fees of 5-20 percent.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo instructed the relevant ministries for the same in a limited Cabinet meeting. He said that the import procedures must be simplified for Textile and textile product (TPT) raw materials to lift the burden off businesses

Jokowi said the TPT industry was in need of immediate revitalization to push further industrialization.

Indonesian Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto in a press release in Jakarta, Tuesday, September 6, 2016 announced that Chinese investor Jiangsu Dongqun Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd has expressed its intent to invest US$100 million in the development of textile industry and textile products (TPT).

They certainly welcome Jiangsu Dongqun Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd’s intention to invest in Indonesia and has also offered some investment options for the company, such as Kendal Industrial Park, Central Java, boasting its vast area and skilled workforce.

The Indonesian government has introduced a third stimulus package stipulates that industrial activities get electricity price cuts from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. However, the textile industry and the state electricity company PLN, which supplies the power, interpret the stipulation differently.

Based on PLN’s understanding, the price cut will only be given to companies consuming more than they usually do every day. The textile industry, meanwhile, says the price cut should be given to industrial activities during the specified timeframe regardless of the amount of their power consumption.

Klewer, the largest textile products and batik market in Solo Indonesia which caught fire on December 27, 2014, its overall reconstruction is estimated to cost to the tune of Rp159 billion.

The Indonesian government has so far disbursed Rp61.8 billion in funds taken from the revised 2015 state budget to revitalize the market after it caught fire on December 27 last year. It will disburse another Rp97.2 billion in funds through the 2016 state budget to complete the construction of Klewer market.

Indonesian to raise import tariff on finished goods covers textiles

The Indonesian government to regularize its tariffs is evaluate the possibility of raising import duties on a wide range of finished goods. According to Industry Ministry’s director of Industry Climate and Quality Policy Research Center Haris Munandar, the potential hike will cover 741 out of over 10,000 existing tariff codes in the current customs system, cover textiles.

The step will support their goal to reach an ideal tariff system where [imported] finished products are charged with higher duties compared to raw materials or intermediate goods.
