Pakistan textile industry’s growth hit over energy crisis and stalled liquidity

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) has urged the government to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to textile industries and speedy processing and liquidation of sales tax refunds.
 
The textile industry’s sustainability and growth are being damaged due to constriction in energy supply and liquidity crunch, said Yasin Siddik, central chairman of Aptm.
 
Energy supply constraints have led to forced closures of production capacities to the extent of 40 to 50 percent.

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) on Friday appreciated the overall increase in textile exports, which went up by 3.9 percent, but expressed trepidation over decline in exports to the rest of the world other than the European Union. This decline could have been avoided if the government addressed the issues, which resulted in the decline.

Pakistan government plans to announce textile package through Statutory Regulatory Orders (SROs) for the textile Industry. Abbas Khan Afridi, the Federal Minister for Textile Industry on Monday assured a textile delegation while talking to a delegation, headed by Chairman, All Pak¬-istan Textile Mills Asso¬ciation (Aptma), Punjab S M Tanveer.
 
The SROs were sent to the Law Division for vetting and would be notified in the next few days.

Cotton is an important source of raw material to the textile industry which has helped the textile industry to achieve $ 10.385 billion during the period of first nine months of this fiscal year as foreign exchange to national exchequer. The cotton shares 1.4 percent in GDP and 6.7 percent in agriculture value addition, which was cultivated on an area of 28,06,000 hectares, 2.5 percent less than last year’s area of 28,79,000 hectares. The production stood at 12.8 million bales during the period against the target of 14.1 million bales set, according to the Ministry of Textile.

All-Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) has drawn the attention of the Federal Minister for Textile Industry Abbas Khan Afraidi towards the duty of five percent still imposed on imports of specialized manmade fibre, such as viscose, acrylic, bamboo, lycra and slub due to which the industry is facing problems. Aptma Chairman Mohammad Yasin Siddik, in a letter to the minister, has stated that Pakistan has no plants for producing specialised manmade fibre.
