Bio-pesticide import benefit cotton farmers

The Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases (CCLS) on Friday approved import of bio-pesticide ‘Gossy­plure’ to help eradicate the population of pink bollworm that attacks cotton crop.

Punjab government and cotton growers had been urging for the bio-pesticide’s import which was barred due to some legal issues.

The CCLS approved the import of Gossyplure as a generic chemical under Form-16 of the Pakistan Agriculture Pesticide Act, 1971. Consequently, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) removed its impediment in import.

While there may not be a place for some of it to go, Verett and Jerry Butman, General Manager of Lubbock Cotton Growers, agree the season ended with a good yield of most irrigated crops. However, dry land crops suffered from the mostly hot and dry summer.

Kris Verett of Verett Farms said that, “As cotton producers, we are an export market and what we rely on is having a home for this cotton,” Also, “We need foreign markets for that to go to and that’s kind of what’s driving the uncertainty in the market.”

Dr. John Robinson, AgriLife Extension cotton marketing economist, said the lower cotton value represents a 10-plus cent discount to growers per pound harvested. He added that, “Reduced quality may not lower cotton’s futures price at all,” he said. “Rather, poor quality will be reflected in discounted cash prices to individual growers. Either way, the price of base grade cotton may not be changed much from this emerging problem.” Also, he said that, reduced production may also be offset by weakening export demand.

The Secretary Agriculture said that Punjab government has issued 110,000 smart phones to the farmers equipped with special applications through which extension services are being provided to cotton growers and other crops. He said that 350.889 million rupees are being spent on Commissioned Research Programme for high yield cotton seed production.

So far, licences for supply equal to 1.25 crore bags have been granted, with that of another 50 crore in the process, said a source in agriculture department.On the other hand, the seed companies appear to be bullish on demand for Bt seeds for the coming season. According to estimates made on basis of licences granted by the agriculture department, 1.75 crore bags of Bt seeds may be pumped in the market by seed makers. This is 10 lakh bags more than the supply available in the state last year.

Burkina Faso ‘s cotton output revised

One of Africa’s top cotton growers, Burkina Faso, revised its 2017-18 cotton production to 563,000 tons, down from earlier estimate of 650,000 tons.

It had earlier showed a downward projection of its cotton harvest owing to the fact that insufficient rains coupled with pest invasion during sowing period decreased production.

Cotton is the second largest export item for Burkina Faso. It accounts for around 15 per cent revenue to the country’s foreign exchange, and employs about four million people.

Cotton is the main raw material for the textile industry of Turkmenistan. Moreover, it is an important export product. The country’s State News Agency reported that Turkmen farmers have fulfilled contractual obligations by having harvested over 1.05 million tons of raw cotton.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated farmers and cotton growers, machine operators and other workers of the agro-industrial complex on this occasion.

The Turkmen farmers are provided with fertilizers, seeds, chemicals and maintenance at discounted prices.

At the Karachi Cotton Exchange on Tuesday, trading remain active while spot rates fell Rs50/maund to Rs6,250/maund (37.324kg) and Rs6,698/40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also dropped to Rs6,395/maund and Rs6,853/40kg after an addition of Rs145 and Rs155 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

KCE recorded 11 transactions of around 15,000 bales at a price of Rs6,225 to Rs6,400/maund. Transactions were recorded from Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Hyderabad, Kotri, Shahdadpur, Tando Adam, Qaboola, Burewala, Sahiwal, Khanewal and Chichawatni.

The Indian state of Punjab Agriculture Department has set a target of 4 lakh hectares to be brought under cotton cultivation in eight districts of the Malwa belt this season. Last year, the area under cotton cultivation was 2.56 lakh hectares. Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department under its high density plantation technique is giving a subsidy of Rs 500 per acre to cotton growers.
