Indian cotton ginning units running below capacity due to less demand and low price

The ginning industry of India is staring at slowdown, on account of subdued demand and disparity in price. According to industry sources, ginning units are running below 65-70 per cent capacity. India's substantial cotton production this year has not translated into good days for ginning sector.

Moreover, farmers are reluctant to sell kapas (raw cotton) at the current prices in expectation of higher price for their produce, bringing down the commodity's arrival by 50 percent from last year.

Pakistan textile exports which presently stand at $13 billion likely to see a boost with the implementation of textile policy. The textile policy is likely to be announced in the second week of July. Subsequent to the implementation of textile policy the people will see rapid growth in textile sector of the country and there will be an increase of at least $1 billion in the first year and $2 billion from the second year.

The government partly rolling back its decisions taken in September last year, has restored benefits on cotton yarn shipments under the Incremental Export Incentivisation Scheme (IEIS) for the current fiscal, according to a notification by the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT).

With this decision, mills would continue to get a 2% export incentive on the incremental value of cotton yarn shipments, compared with last year. The move will help textile mills as cotton yarn exports are expected to rise 25% in 2013-14 from last year's level of about 1,100 million kg.

Incentives for raw cotton and yarn exports that were withdrawn in September have been restored back. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), a unit of the trade ministry, gave no reason for restoring export benefits for yarn, a value-added product used by textile mills.

India, the world's second-biggest raw cotton export, has restored an incentive scheme for cotton yarn exports, an official order said on Thursday.

Traders has projected that India will ship around 8-9 million bales of raw cotton in the crop year to September, down from 10.1 million bales in 2012/13.
