European bloc to remain biggest market for Pakistani textile sector

The European bloc likely to remain the biggest export market for Pakistan’s textile sector in coming years despite a huge influx of Chinese investment in the South Asian nation was emphasized by Honorary Consul General of Pakistan for Finland Wille Eerola.

However, Pakistan textile lobbies should be aware that China itself was a big exporter of raw textile products and should also focus on other export products to increase its share in the European market and reduce dependence on textiles.

In order to increase interaction between people and trust between businessmen of two countries, Pakistan and Kazakhstan, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) initiated the concept of Pakistan Trade Caravan, which opened at Almaty Kazakhstan on Friday which was largely appreciated by visiting participants.

Some 45 companies in textile, agro foods, herbal, pharmaceutical and handicrafts displayed their products to a large audience of members of Kazakh Chambers and businessmen.

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, during his meeting an Italian business delegation on Wednesday, said that to achieve better production, duties had already been brought down from 43 percent to 9 percent.

However, Pakistan is considering to further decrease import duties on machinery in order to improve production of textiles and other leather apparels.

Pakistan is a huge market which offers excellent opportunities to Romanian businessmen in various sectors of the economy particularly the textile sector, said Ambassador of Romania, Emilian Ion while speaking at a meeting during his visit to Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA).

According to him, although trade volume between Pakistan and Romania has been improving with balance of trade in favour of Romania but this volume was not depicting the real potential and can be improved further as huge potential to enhance trade exists between the two countries.

Trade authority of Turkey last week extended higher levies on Indonesian yarn of man-made staple fibers, which are to apply for five years following a recent review. The duties, ranging from 25 cents to 40 cents for each kilogram of yarn, have affected more than 20 local firms, including major textile manufacturers PT Indorama and PT Sri Rejeki Isman (Sritex).

Besides Indonesia, the expanded tariffs, particularly at higher levels, are likely to impact other producers, including China and India.

Afghanistan is one of the major trading partners of Pakistan and has been top exporting market for Pakistani products since ages. The bilateral trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan is likely to touch $5 billion in 2014-15.

Afghanistan is the fourth largest export market for Pakistan after United States, European Union and China. In recent years, trade with Afghanistan has moved from informal to formal sector. In 2000-01, the formal exports to Afghanistan stood at $140 million that grew after a decade to $2.33 billion in 2010-11.
