Pakistan witnessed 2.62 percent growth in exports of readymade garments about 9,657 thousand dozen worth US$ 698.403 million during first four months (July-October) of current financial year as compared to exports of 9,934 thousand dozen valuing US$ 680.567 million in the corresponding period of last financial year.

Origin Africa, both an international trade fair on textile and clothing and an ongoing effort dedicated to improving African Cotton, Textile and Apparel trade which is all set to be held in Madagascar in November. This is the first time for Madagascar to host this international event, said the Executive Director of Madagascar Export Processing Zone Association, Eva Razafimandimby during a press conference held in Madagascar’s capital Antananarivo on Monday.

The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association has aggrieved over the authorities’ imprudent decision of gas suspension for industries in winter terming it as a unilateral action.

The association opined that the government should shelve its gas outage plan to bring the country’s economy out of sluggishness, as this suspension would lead innumerable people to lose their jobs and would also affect the industrial growth.

Turkey becomes the sixth largest textile exporter in the world

According to a note released by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜİK) on 25 August, Turkey was ranked the sixth largest textile and confection exporter of the world by making around 4 percent of such exports globally in 2014.

China topped the list with 41 percent, followed by India with 5.4 percent, Italy with 5.3 percent and Germany with 5 percent.

There has also been a decrease in the share of textiles trade in the world. While the share of the sector was 7 percent in global trade in 1995, this rate dropped to 4.6 percent in 2014.

Textile importers renegotiating price as INR depreciates

The recent devaluation of the yuan has led to a weakness in the rupee against the dollar. So far in 2015-16, the rupee has depreciated 13.9 per cent and 6.6 per cent against the euro and dollar, respectively.

The depreciating rupee has prompted textile and apparel importers abroad to renegotiate the terms of their contracts with Indian exporters. Now, new contract orders are being deferred till the Indian currency stabilises.

The People’s Bank of China (PBC) devalued the Renminbi (RMB/Yuan) on 11 August by 2015 by 1.9%, the largest one day devaluation since 1994. The ‘daily fix’ of the currency to the US$ moved out to almost 6.23 Yuan versus 6.1162 Yuan the previous day. Although the move spooked global markets and raised yet more concerns about the health of the Chinese economy, it will be interesting to gauge its impact on global trade, particularly that of textiles.

India is self-sufficient in textiles as the textile industry is one of the major contributors for India’s export basket contributing 12% of India’s total foreign exchange receipts and is not dependent on imports. This was projected by then Planning Commission that Textile exports will grow by 12% in coming years.
