The ninth edition of Texfair, an exhibition of textile machinery spares and accessories, and the second edition of Farm to Finish, an exhibition of textile products started off at the Codissia Trade Fair Complex organized by Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA). The event is on for four days from January 9.

At the inaugural of Texfair 2015, Prem Malik, chairman of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry, said that one of the main areas that the Indian textile industry needs to focus on is diversifying to man-made fibre-based textile products.

The Indian textile industry plays an important role of the largest contributing sectors in the country’s exports by contributing nearly 13.25% to the country’s total exports basket with exports to the tune of $41.57 billion (about Rs. 2,65,100 crore) in FY2013-14.

Of which the Ready Made Garments (RMG) contributes to a lion’s share of global trade with a chunk of 55% in the total exports. India is ranked sixth with exports to the tune of $16 billion, which is around 40% of the country’s textiles exports.

The Indian textile industry is facing hurdle on account of differential taxation, rising energy cost, lop-sided fibre and trade policy. And this is at a time when the global demand for fibre – both cotton and MMF (man-made fibre) is on the rise.

Stakeholders have sought a cut in the excise and import duty structure for synthetic fibre to deal with the trend. It wants the excise duty to be lowered from the prevailing 13 percent to 4 - 5 per cent and the import duty from 28 percent to 2 - 3 percent.

India garment exports hit $7.07bn during April-Aug period

India garment exports due to steady flow of orders from Europe and a weaker rupee witnessed a jump of 23% in August to $1.38billion. With a robust growth in August, exports in the April-August period hit $7.07 billion, up 18% y-o-y, according to the Apparel Exports Promotion Council (AEPC) data.

Having slipped nearly 6% in the last fiscal and witnessing a drop in 10 of the 12 months of 2012-13, garment exports started picking up since March last year as the domestic currency continued a downward journey and demand from the US started picking up due to an economic recovery.
