Bangladesh imports new textile machineries to expand capacity

Bangladesh’s imports of capital machinery by the primary textile sector increased about 54 percent year-on-year in fiscal 2014-15 on the back of higher demand for raw materials from garment exporters.

According to data from Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, $445.7 million worth of capital machinery was imported by the sector in the last fiscal year. A BTMA certification is required for importing machinery for the textile sector.

The Indian textile industry plays an important role of the largest contributing sectors in the country’s exports by contributing nearly 13.25% to the country’s total exports basket with exports to the tune of $41.57 billion (about Rs. 2,65,100 crore) in FY2013-14.

Of which the Ready Made Garments (RMG) contributes to a lion’s share of global trade with a chunk of 55% in the total exports. India is ranked sixth with exports to the tune of $16 billion, which is around 40% of the country’s textiles exports.

A weaker rupee and steady demand from China and US had helped the textiles exports in the past year. From April, demand for raw material like yarn from China has fallen dramatically and inventory levels have risen. Further, falling cotton ribre prices have been asserting pressure on yarn pricing and cutting unit value realisation, although rupee continues to remain weak.

Sri Lanka’s apparel makers have starting feel the need to popularize their brand among the local people as it has shown a grown of 10 percent in the domestic industry from the last year. There is a scope to further enhance the market as a huge untapped market locally exist, which needs to be addressed and cater good quality garments for an affordable price.
