Time to revive Khadi market in Indian textile industry

The Indian textile industry, which caters to clothing need which has an estimated market size of $108 billion is divided into two broad segments within the industry, namely the traditional hand-woven and hand-spun textile segment, and the modernized mill. Khadi is defined as any cloth woven on handlooms and hand-spun from cotton, woolen or silk yarns in India or the combination of two or all of these yarns, as per the Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act 1956.

YFA 2016 MSME exhibitors eligible for up to 90% government subsidy

Exhibitors at the second edition of the Yarn, Fabric & Accessories Trade Show (YFA) 2016, which will run from November 23 (Wednesday) to 26 (Saturday), 2016, will now be eligible to subsidies offered by the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC), a government of India undertaking.

YFA 2016 is now supported by NSIC, and now MSME units who participate in the YFA 2016 exhibition, can claim subsidy under the Marketing Assistance Scheme (MAS) of NSIC of 60-95% under various categories of MAS.

A clutch of several Chinese exhibitors will set up stalls showcasing yarns, fabrics and garment accessories at a special Chinese Pavilion at the upcoming second edition of the Yarn, Fabric & Accessories Trade Show (YFA) Show which will run from November 23 (Wednesday) to 26 (Saturday), 2016.

To add an icing to the cake, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in a letter to the organizers expressed his happiness on the organization of the YFA 2016 show and sent his best wishes to the organizers and participants.

NITMA elected its new leadership team in its AGM held on 15 July’ 2016 at New Delhi. UK’s decision to exit from the European Union which in turn impacted the currency, worries exporters from the tiny town of Tirupur as many of the exporters exports around Rs26,000 crore of knitwear. According to A Saktivel, president, Tirupur Exporters Association, it will be temporary but in the long run this will help them since UK will support more which it could not when it was part of the EU.

EU is a major destination for readymade garments (RMG) export from India. In 2015-16, total RMG exports from India was Rs 1,11,236 crore, of which EU's share was 36.97%.

Indian textile exports remain flat at $40 bn in FY16 lower than target set

The textile industry despite poor market conditions has done well as compared to other sectors on export front. India’s textile exports remained flat at $40 billion in 2015-16 which is lower than the target of $47.5 billion set by the government for textile and clothing, Union Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said after the inauguration of Technotex 2016 conference here.

The industry experts said that the subdued trend in exports was due to recessionary trends in Europe and the US markets. In 2014-15, textile exports stood at $41.4 billion.

The textile industry, which is the country's second largest employer after agriculture, contributes nearly 14 per cent to industrial production and 4 per cent to the GDP has pitched for incentives such as lowering excise duty on man-made fibre and filament by half and changes in labour laws in the budget for next financial year.

The textiles industry has demanded better market access to major markets like the US and EU via trade pacts to help realize its untapped potential.

US Apparel brand Urban Factory sets foot in Indian market

Urban Factory, a United States-based apparel brand, has entered India independently and aims to open stores in Bengaluru and Hyderabad by the mid of this year.

Madhuri Lakkapragada, founder of Urban Factory, said that all styles that come in India are delayed by a season and unfortunately, fashion comes to India in the end.

She added that they want to address this gap by bringing current customised styles in India.

Last year, India had liberalised norms for foreign direct investment in single-brand retail, allowing brands such as Urban Factory to set up stores in the country.
