At the beginning of the year, the Indian textile ministry had approached designers to promote few dying arts and crafts of India. To be a part of this movement, they had taken up a few projects with an aim to complete them one at a time. One of which is the ahimsa silk, said the Mumbai-based designer Archana Kochhar who visited the looms where the silk fabric is handwoven, and guided the weavers to make a few designs and colour changes to meet contemporary style requirements.

India garment exports due to steady flow of orders from Europe and a weaker rupee witnessed a jump of 23% in August to $1.38billion. With a robust growth in August, exports in the April-August period hit $7.07 billion, up 18% y-o-y, according to the Apparel Exports Promotion Council (AEPC) data.

Having slipped nearly 6% in the last fiscal and witnessing a drop in 10 of the 12 months of 2012-13, garment exports started picking up since March last year as the domestic currency continued a downward journey and demand from the US started picking up due to an economic recovery.

The Indian Textile Ministry has decided to put all information related to Textile Upgradation Fund (TUF) Scheme online. This will assist the beneficiaries to overcome any possible procedural hassles and also delay and confusion over the communication. The decision on TUF procedure to be made online as it was observed that of the 23 lakh powerlooms, only about 1.25 lakh looms have taken advantage of the TUF and other schemes.

TUFS facilitates modernisation and upgradation of textiles industry by providing credit at reduced rates to entrepreneurs both in the organised and the unorganised sector in the textiles industry. The Textile ministry to benefit small units in the powerloom sector will be introducing hire-purchase scheme under TUFS.

The Indian powerloom sector has around 43 lakh weavers who are in severe need of modernisation and the ministry is hopeful that this hire-purchase scheme will benefit them as each machinery costs Rs 20-30 lakh.
