Pakistan textile industry eagerly waiting for govt to unveil textile package

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) chairman SM Tanveer said on Sunday that textile industrialists were planning downstream integration to add another $13 billion to the exports and help the country to get rid of loans from international donors. An increase of $13 billion export in next three years would create another 13 million jobs in the country and hence appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to announce a relief package for textile industry before Eid-ul-Azha.

Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) and the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), value added textile industry association of Pakistan after holding a series of meetings has decided to opposed a proposal of banning the import of textile raw materials, saying the local textile industry is unable to produce these raw materials.

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has threatened to go on a strike if corrective measures are not taken by the government by August 31. There is a full-fledged Ministry of Textiles and a Textile Policy has been announced for the period, 2014 to 2019. Despite all this, Pakistan textile industry appears to be languishing due to neglect and lack of implementation of the Policy.

The Pakistan government on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr announced that public holiday has been extended from 17 July, 2015 to 21 July, 2015 as a result business activity has mostly ceased as the various markets will remain closed for five days. Moreover, there will also be no trucks and transportation plying on the roads to haul any cotton from the ginneries to the textile mills in various parts of the country.

The Chairman of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, Mr S.M. Tanveer had called for an emergency meeting of Aptma’s general body to deliberate on the adverse circumstances and found it not viable to incur losses by operating mills partially. Mr Tanveer said on Sunday that the association had decided to ‘voluntarily’ close down the textile industry because of the losses it had been suffering.

The Aptma chairman had appealed to the government to save the textile industry from collapse and save jobs of a 10 million-strong workforce.

Commerce Minister Khurram Dastagir after his separate meetings with the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma and carpet exporters on Monday said that the government after two years of consolidation was now in a position to facilitate the exporting sectors through incentives, market access and a viable long-term policy.

Federal Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said on Monday after holding a meeting with Pakistan Carpet Manufactures and Exporters Association (PCMEA) and All Pakistaan Textile Mills Association that Pakistan is negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) with Thailand, Turkey, and Korea to boost exporting sectors including textile.

The commerce minister said that Pakistan is negotiating with governments of these three countries regarding signing of free trade agreements in search of new markets to boost exports.

The rising cotton prices which had mind- numbing effects on the Pakistan market last week continue to remain fixed in the wake of the fact that the domestic market is left with only 200,00 bales of unsold cotton.

For whatever minimal quantity of seed cotton (kapas / phutti) prices in Sindh were quoted between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,600 per 40 kgs, according to the quality, while in the Punjab they were quoted between Rs 2,400 to Rs 3,100 per 40 kilogrammes in a firming market.

Chairman All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) S M Tanveer expressing concern over the critical situation the textile industry of Pakistan is going through due to high cost of doing business, energy constraints, high cost of finance and labour wages as against the regional competitors. Moreover, if the government alters the Reduced Rate Regime (RRR), fails to release stuck up refunds and does not ensure liquidity supply from banks to the textile industry immediately, it may end up with 50% closure of the textile industry.

The central body of APTMA expressing concern over the steep fall in textile and clothing exports of 16 percent in the month of March due to depreciating Euro has constituted a task force to deliberate upon the gravity of situation, which is squeezing fast the viability of the industry by and large and impacting its exports negatively.

The APTMA task force on “sustainability and way forward” has a strong representation of all sub-sectors including spinning, weaving, processing, home textiles, knitwear, woven garments, towels and synthetic textile.
