MoU inked to explore new horizon between Aptma, Chinese commerce ministry

An MoU was signed between the Ministry of Commerce China, Weihai and the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA)on Saturday to explore the potential of joint ventures and investment opportunities in textile sector of Pakistan.

A 20-members Chinese delegation from the Ministry of Commerce Weihai, China visited the APTMA Punjab headed by Ms Zhang Buwen of Shandog Hushan Group was welcomed by Chairman APTMA Punjab Aamir Fayyaz.

The Ministry of Commerce China, Weihai has invited the APTMA to visit China in May this year.

APTMA sought remedial measure to achieve textile export target

A research study prepared by the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) reports that the Pakistan textile industry is impaired due to heavy taxes and surcharges, rendering it uncompetitive compared to regional economies. As per the report, other irritants include energy tariff, under utilization of power generation capacity and energy shortage.

The export sector is subject to five percent duties, taxes and surcharges, while competitors in India enjoy tax-free regime on exports of textile products. While in Bangladesh and China, levies on exports are around one percent.

Pakistan exported textile commodities worth $961 million during November as compared to $1.13 billion of the corresponding month of the previous year, decline by 14.6 percent due to both external and internal issues going on in the country. Exports Likely to further tumble in the months to come with the suspension of gas supply to Punjab’s textile mills indefinitely by the government, said an official of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association.

Trading at cotton market was lackluster as demand remained soft though prices were mostly stable on Thursday. The seed cotton (kapas / phutti) prices in Sindh are said to have ranged from Rs 2000 to Rs 2900 per 40 kgs, while in the Punjab they reportedly extended from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per 40 kilogrammes according to the quality. Business was reported to have been conducted in moderate quantities.

Pakistan local textile industry badly affected by the surge in import of man-made fibre (MMF) yarns, including polyester, acrylic and fabric, in the domestic commerce. The import of MMF yarns has surged to 72,300 tonnes in 2014-15 against 47,700 tonnes in 2012-13. Similarly, the import of fabric made from MMF yarns has also reached to 562,000 square metres in 2014-15 against 180,000 square metres in 2012-13, according to the Acting Chairman Shahid Mazhar of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Acting Chairman Shahid Mazhar.
