Mozambique developing its own national standard for sustainable cotton

Mozambique to revitalize its cotton industry is now developing its own national standard for sustainable cotton production, which will mirror the principles and criteria developed by Better Cotton Initiative (BCI).

The Mozambique government has partnered with the BCI. The 2014 strategic partnership agreement was signed by the Cotton Institute of Mozambique (IAM) and BCI embeds the Better Cotton principles and criteria within Mozambique’s national regulations for cotton growing.

Prosperity Textile is one of the fastest growing and global best recognized denim mills in China with its production base in Shaoguan, Guangdong province, has decide to begin using Better Cotton for all its lightweight cotton denim fabrics beginning with the Spring/Summer 2017 season. According to the company, there will be no change in the price with the shift to Better Cotton. The rising cotton prices which had mind- numbing effects on the Pakistan market last week continue to remain fixed in the wake of the fact that the domestic market is left with only 200,00 bales of unsold cotton.

For whatever minimal quantity of seed cotton (kapas / phutti) prices in Sindh were quoted between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,600 per 40 kgs, according to the quality, while in the Punjab they were quoted between Rs 2,400 to Rs 3,100 per 40 kilogrammes in a firming market.

To improve the quality of cotton production in Pakistan, the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) on Friday. The MoU will supplement the efforts for mainstreaming production and consumption of BCI cotton in Pakistan.

The initiative also aims in achieving sustainability targets and increase the market access for textile products from Pakistan.

Aptma will be the Programme Promoting Agency within Pakistan to promote the initiative in line with the BCI’s Strategic Plan for the country.

The project Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) has managed to reached around 7.5 lakh farmers who will work to produce almost one million tons of Better Cotton with project spending of €9.6 million for 2014.

Better Cotton farmers will use up to 20 percent less water, 67 percent less pesticides, and use more organic fertilizer, to make their crop more profitable.

An investors meeting was conducted by the committee of Better Cotton Fast Track Program (BCFTP), in Delhi, India, where 50 Better Cotton projects were approved across India, Pakistan, China, Mozambique and Mali.
