The Pakistan business community welcomes the European Union decision to retain the generalized system of preferences (GSP) plus status for two year. Under GSP+ Pakistani goods have duty-free access on 91 percent of EU tariff lines. The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has stressed the need for an aggressive marketing plan, besides implementing the prime minister’s export package to maximise benefits from the decision.

Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) to encourage value addition, reduce cost of doing business and bridge the gap between production and consumption is urging the authorities to relax duties on yarn import.

PRGMEA official said that the availability of competitively priced and high-quality cotton yarn to value-added textile industry is the basic foundation on which export competitiveness is built.

The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has organized a three day ‘International Textile Asia Exhibition’ where more than 350 international brands from around 29 countries have displayed their products at more than 500 stalls at the Expo Centre. To promote cooperation between Pakistan and Chinese textile and apparel companies, The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PRGMEA) and China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textile and Apparel (CCCT) had signed MoU in March 2016. The two associations have decided to give a practical shape to the MoU.

It is the first time that a Pakistani garment sector body signed such an agreement with the overseas stakeholders for strengthening mutual trade of garment and textile.

Appreciating the prime minister for announcing the Rs180 billion package for enhancing exports, The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has urged the government to allocate at least Rs60 billion for the export-oriented industry in the upcoming budget 2017-18 under the prime minister’s Rs180 billion package.

They have also asked for the release of stuck tax refund claims of exporters, including the drawback of local taxes and levies scheme, customs and sales tax rebate, etc.

Pakistan apparel industry has been facing severe shortage of cotton yarn at a time when international buyers are planning to place orders for Christmas. The local garment industry due to price factor and especially owing to artificial shortage of cotton yarn created by the spinning as well as ginning industry, which are holding stock in the hope of further price hike, are not able to entertain the international buyers, said Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (Prgmea) chief coordinator Ijaz Khokhar.

The prices of cotton yarn 10 count single yarn have increased by around 25 percent to reach Rs11500 per bag of 100 pounds from Rs9950 during the last one-and-a-half months and same is the case with other varieties of yarn, including 16 count 30 yarn and 16 count 20 yarn due to cartelization of local manufacturers who are taking advantage of 10 percent additional regulatory duty on the import of yarn.
