Pakistan’s textile exports decline 7.34% in July-May

In the July-May period of 2015-16, Pakistan’s textile exports continued to decline while the foreign exchange earnings from all other exportable products decreased except for readymade garments, according to official reports.

Textile exports of the country registered a negative growth of 7.34 per cent to US$11.468 billion in July-May 2015-16 as compared to the same period last year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data.

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Punjab Chairman Aamir Fayyaz stated on Monday that around 450 units of spinning, weaving and processing were being supplied gas just for four hours a day, which now has been halted completely.

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has suspended gas supply to Punjab’s textile mills indefinitely, the factory owners association said.

In October 2015, Pakistan’s textile exports declined by over 10 per cent as compared to the same month last year mainly due to continuous energy shortage, high cost of production and declining prices globally.

According to the latest figures of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Pakistan’s textile exports were $1.05 billion in October 2015 as against $1.18 billion of the same month of last year, down 10.69 percent.

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Central Chairman Tariq Saud stated that the government’s decision of imposing regulatory duty of 10% on yarn and fabric is sensible and based on thorough facts.

Around 40% capacity of spinning, weaving and processing mills has become impaired, closed and inoperative.

In this situation, the government’s decision would play a crucial role in saving the textile industry of Pakistan to come out of the crisis, said Tariq.

In Pakistan, six major sub-sectors of textile industry have shut down due to energy crisis, high cost of doing business and inconsistency in government policies, said Tariq Saud, the Chairman of All-Pakistan Textile Mills Association.

About 30% of the textile industry’s production capacity worth $3,467 million is not into operations thereby affecting the country’s exports, he stated.

The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association has aggrieved over the authorities’ imprudent decision of gas suspension for industries in winter terming it as a unilateral action.

The association opined that the government should shelve its gas outage plan to bring the country’s economy out of sluggishness, as this suspension would lead innumerable people to lose their jobs and would also affect the industrial growth.

Chairman All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) S M Tanveer expressing concern over the critical situation the textile industry of Pakistan is going through due to high cost of doing business, energy constraints, high cost of finance and labour wages as against the regional competitors. Moreover, if the government alters the Reduced Rate Regime (RRR), fails to release stuck up refunds and does not ensure liquidity supply from banks to the textile industry immediately, it may end up with 50% closure of the textile industry.
