New revised DBK rates likely to create positive impact on overall apparel sector in India

The government has notified new duty drawback rates which will boost the overall perception of Indian apparel sector and raise competitiveness in the global market. A separate entry has been created to distinguish certain export products such as cotton yarn of less than 50 counts or 50 or more counts; core spun cotton yarn containing three per cent or more of lycra /spandex/elastane, cotton blankets and flame-retardant fabrics based on their increasing international demand.

The newly-restructured committee on reforms in the power looms and textiles sector, under the chairmanship of Suresh Halwankar has been asked by the government to come up with some recommendations for the survival and growth of the textile industry. In this connect, he sees privatization as one-time settlement scheme for sick textile mills, where private players will be given 51% share of the mill to revive them.

Gildan Activewear Inc., a Canadian sportswear company plans expansion of its Eden distribution hub which would involve an investment of the tune of $23 million. The project includes an investment of $12.7 million in equipment and $10.4 million in building improvements.

Rockingham County commissioners approved $448,720 of incentives for the project, said Jan Critz, director of economic development for the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development. She said that the city of Eden will consider incentives tonight.

The slow moving demand and falling lint prices in major world markets has lead to further drop in cotton prices on Monday in Pakistan cotton market.
