Vietnam textile production fails to meet garment requirements

Vietnam textile industry is still facing many problems in textile production, as fabric determines the cost and quality of finished garment products hence textiles still cannot meet garment requirements, said Vu Huy Dong, general director of Damsan JSC.

Vietnam has to import 65-70 percent of fabric every year, it exports two-thirds of yarn output. This means that Vietnam has yarn in excess but not enough fabric.

Vietnam’s apparel industry is growing rapidly. With an export growth of 20 percent a year, the sector is expected to generate a turnover of $40 billion by 2020. There has been a large inflow of foreign investments in the country’s textile industry, which has led to an increased demand for cotton.

Mainly exporting to Bangladesh, Pakistan and China, India is the world's top producer of cotton.

Vietnam may emerge as a major export area for Indian cotton soon after a series of Free Trade Agreements which constitute the Trans-Pacific.

In the five years from 2010 to 2015, the Vietnam textile industry held a growth rate of export value at 15 percent per year. This year export value is expected to reach $29 billion.

The target in export value was much lower than the figures in reality and the development plan was not suitable with the real development of the industry. The textile and garment industry was slated to reach US$20 billion in export value in 2015, but the industry hit an export value of $27.5 billion.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will arrive at Bodh Gaya on October 28 and then a day later travel to Delhi for formal, substantive meetings. At present, Vietnam is the world’s third largest importers of textiles and ranks fifth on the list of the largest suppliers of garment products. On the other hand, India is the world’s second largest producer of input materials for the textile and garment industry, such as cotton, cloth and fiber. Keeping this in mind, the Indian textile and garment material suppliers have drawn up a plan to raise their market share in Vietnam to 25 percent by 2018.
