The textile industry has sought immediate release of refunds under various government schemes to ease the liquidity crunch faced by manufacturers and exporters.

In a joint memorandum presented by seven national-level textile associations and major export promotion councils to the Union Government, the industry said that since the units are facing acute liquidity issues, the government should take steps to release the refund arrears under programmes such as ROSL/ROSCTL, Duty Drawback scheme, GST refunds, and Technology Upgradation Fund scheme.

Export of cotton textiles continued their downtrend and registered a fall of 24 per cent during the April-July period. The provisional data released for the first three weeks of August also showed a decline of 25 per cent month-on-month.

European fashion brands who buy readymade garments from Bangladesh agreed on Tuesday to hand over responsibility for issues like worker safety to a new body called the Readymade Sustainability Council (RSC).

RSC, governed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), and brands and workers’ representatives, will replace the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh to ensure compliance with work-place monitoring in the industry.

Kitsbow, a specialty clothing manufacturer based in California, will create 53 new jobs in McDowell County, Governor Roy Cooper announced today. The company will invest $890,000 in operating a manufacturing and distribution facility in Old Fort.

“Kitsbow’s decision to move their manufacturing facility to Old Fort is exciting news for McDowell County,” said Governor Cooper. “This new plant means growth for the whole area and good jobs for the people who will power production.”

Cotton yarn exports fall to 25% in Q1

The export of cotton yarn has dropped 35% in the first quarter of FY20 to $696 million compared to $1.063 billion in the same period last fiscal.

Quoting government sources, the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) said that in April the fall was 21% to $266 million compared to $337 million in the same month previous year. May saw a decline of 31% to $241 million against $349 million in May 2018 and June saw a whopping decline of 50% to $188 million compared to $378 million reported in June previous year.

The government may impose anti-dumping duty on imports of certain types of filament yarn from China, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand as the commerce ministry has started investigation into alleged dumping of the product following complaints from domestic players.

The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), under the commerce ministry, has initiated the probe as it has found "sufficient evidence" of dumping of nylon multi-filament yarn from these countries.
