New fund helps apparel industry to invest beyond sustainability

Innovation hubs Fashion for Good and The Mills Fabrica have teamed up with the C&A Foundation to launch an investment fund that will aim to “spearhead systemic change in the apparel and footwear supply chain”.

The Good Fashion Fund has launched with initial funding of $13 million, but has a target of quickly attracting new investors and raising the size of the fund to $60 million . It will be managed by specialist Amsterdam-based investment firm Fount.

US profits hurt by cheap foreign polyester

A major U.S. consumer of RPET enjoyed higher sales figures but suffered significantly lower net income last fiscal year. One reason was cheap polyester imports from China and India.

Unifi, which recycles PET into REPREVE brand fiber, reported sales of $708.8 million during the 2019 fiscal year (the year that ended June 30, 2019). When adjusting for foreign currency translation impacts, that was up 7.6% over the prior year, according to a press release.

Cotton yarn, fabric exports fall by 24%

Monthly exports of cotton yarn is at a 5-year-low.

Export of cotton textiles continued their downtrend and registered a fall of 24 per cent during the April-July period. The provisional data released for the first three weeks of August also showed a decline of 25 per cent month-on-month.

Gloves converting sign language into sounds

An engineer from Kenya has used smart textiles and sensors to create a glove that ‘translates’ sign language to words via an app.

Roy Allela’s niece was born deaf, and he wanted to help the family communicate better.

The Sign-IO gloves have five flex sensors mounted on each finger to quantify how much a finger is bent. They convert the change in bend to electrical resistance – the more the bend, the more the resistance. They then send messages to a program via Bluetooth and a text-to-speech engine vocalises the predicted gestures.

Anti-odour textile technology provider Polygiene has announced a new partnership with lifestyle brand Tommy Hilfiger, part of the PVH Corp group.

From spring 2020, Tommy Sport men’s and women’s tops, shorts and tank-tops will have Polygiene technology.

The Swedish textile technology provider said the use of Polygiene in these garments will help prolong their useful life, saving water by reducing the need for washing, while the prevention of bacterial growth will stop the premature break down of the fabric.
