New fund helps apparel industry to invest beyond sustainability

Innovation hubs Fashion for Good and The Mills Fabrica have teamed up with the C&A Foundation to launch an investment fund that will aim to “spearhead systemic change in the apparel and footwear supply chain”.

The Good Fashion Fund has launched with initial funding of $13 million, but has a target of quickly attracting new investors and raising the size of the fund to $60 million . It will be managed by specialist Amsterdam-based investment firm Fount.

Lowa aquired an important footwear supplier

German outdoor footwear brand Lowa has announced that it has acquired one of its most important suppliers. Slovakia-based Riko Sport has been making shoes for the brand since 1992.

Riko employs approximately 1,900 people in Italy and Slovakia. The addition of these jobs will bring Lowa’s total workforce to more than 2,000 people.

Nike has unveiled its latest innovation in athletic footwear technology: the Nike Joyride cushioning system.

Joyride is a new, proprietary cushioning platform, released Thursday, which Nike is positioning next to the its revolutionary Nike Air technology and its TPU foam-based Nike React collection. Nike says the new system was designed to provide the holy grail of running shoe features—powerful impact absorption combined with superior energy return—all personalized to fit an individual runner’s stride.

VF Corporation revenue up by 6% in first quarter

Apparel and footwear group VF Corporation, whose brands include The North Face, Vans, Timberland and Reef, has reported revenues of $2.3 billion for the first quarter of its current fiscal year, the three-month period ending June 30.

This is an increase of 6% compared to the same quarter last year.

The group’s outdoor segment increased its revenues by 7% to $610.6 million, which included a 9% increase for The North Face. The increase for the group’s active segment was 8% year on year, reaching $1.2 billion; within this segment, Vans increased its revenues by 20%.

Even as trade war jitters and changes in sourcing have shaken the footwear industry in the United States and abroad, a new report claims the sector should still expect solid growth in demand over the next four years.

In its most recent batch of “Focus Reports,” The Freedonia Group, a division of MarketResearch.com, said the current footwear market will grow 4 percent in value, from $26.8 billion in 2018 to $32.6 billion in 2023. However, the growth will not be equally spread across categories.
