Indian textile sector suffering in international market

India ranked fifth in the global textile and clothing exports in 2018 though it was in the second position between 2014 and 2017, according to the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry.

Sanjay K. Jain, chairman of the Confederation, has said in a press release that the space vacated by China was largely occupied by the least developed countries, including Vietnam and Bangladesh. India has not been able to tap the opportunities because of its competitive disadvantages and trade barriers in the international markets.

US startup claims to make activewear from CBD

A US-based start-up claims it is the first brand to offer activewear infused with CBD (cannabidiol), an active ingredient in cannabis derived from the hemp plant.

Acabada CEO and co-founder Seth Baum says CBD can have a positive effect on pain and inflammation.

He said: "While typical CBD products such as tinctures and edibles are growing exponentially in popularity, we began to envision a product that addressed health and wellness through a different lens."

Acrylic, cotton prices mostly down in the key regions

Acrylic staple fibre prices in July were down in the Asian markets of China, India, and Pakistan during the month. In China, ASF offers reacted to the recent downtrend in the raw material ACN cost this month. Downstream demand was dull as yarn producers themselves witnessed lower sales, which in turn resulted into lower procurement of acrylic fiber during the month. Supply in the market was largely stable with many plants either idled or had cut production.

Nylon or polyamide chain prices see mixed trends

Nylon or polyamide chip prices in July saw mixed trends amid firmer CPL cost during the month. In China, offers for nylon chip were mostly up as demand from downstream plants improved during the month. Offers for Taiwan-origin chips fell 0.8% from the previous month. In China, bright conventional spinning nylon-6 chips were up 3.6% from June while semi-dull chips rose 4.7% on the month.

Polyester fibre and yarn prices plummet in Asia

Polyester staple fibre (PSF) prices in China jumped at the beginning of July but plummeted towards the end of the month due to a decrease in demand. In India, PSF producers increased their offers for the month, however trading activity was passable. In Pakistan, prices rose sharply during the month. In China, 1.4D PSF was up US cents 5 a kg as compared to June. In India, 1.2D PSF prices rose US cents 2 a kg from last month. In Pakistan, prices in Karachi were up US cents 6 a kg on the month.

Man-made fibre (MMF) industry is contributing 2% to India’s GDP and providing jobs to over 18 million people directly and more than 20 million indirectly and technical textiles are expected to see a significant growth in coming time, according to a textiles export body.

Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council chairman Ronak Rughani said with an increasing focus on protecting environment, the demand for man-made fibre (MMF) textiles as a substitute for cotton is growing globally.

With production on a nosedive, all is definitely not well in the country’s largest man-made fabric (MMF) hub. Polyester fabric has decreased production by almost half from 13,000 metric tonne (MT)to 7,500MT per annum.
