New nylon plant by Evonik

Evonik Industries AG has broken ground on a 400 million euro ($442.1 million) production plant for nylon 12 at its manufacturing site in Marl, Germany.

The new unit, which represents Evonik’s biggest single investment in Germany to date, will expand the company’s nylon 12 production capacity by more than 50 percent, Evonik officials said in a Sept. 17 news release which did not provide specific capacity details.

Magnum Venus Products (MVP), a leading manufacturer of composites application equipment, collaborated with Polynt and the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to deploy the first large-scale reactive polymer additive manufacturing system commercially available to industry. MVP’s Reactive Additive Manufacturing (RAM) machine, first announced in March, and Polynt’s Reactive Additive Deposition (PRD1520) material together are reimagining additive manufacturing to enable fabrication of thermoset materials at large-scale.

Hyosung to debut recycled spandex

Fibre manufacturer Hyosung will be presenting an updated collection of its recycled fibres at the upcoming Intertextile Shanghai show (September 25 to 27), including its first innovations in recycled spandex.

It claims its recycled yarns offer the same performance levels as its standard products.

The South Korean group will also show its cooling fibres, mipan regen aqua x nylon and regen askin, and its natural touch polyester cotna fibre. It will also focus on creora Color+, a spandex that provides vibrant colours for nylon.

Egypt wants to be a textile hub

Egypt wants to become the next textile hub. The Government of the country has provided a budget of 21,000 million Egyptian pounds (1,160 million euros) for a plan to boost textile production in the country, with the aim of becoming the largest factory of fabrics on the planet.

The plan of the Government is to open four new factories and pave the ground for the installation of more. It also plans to increase aid to renovate machinery and strengthen the training of workers, according to Just Style.

Advance textiles recycling in Finland

A new infrared-based technology promises to give textiles recycling a giant leap forward by replacing manual sorting with an automated method, according to its developers.

Southwest Finland-based recycling firm LSJH has developed technology for sorting waste textiles in collaboration with the Lahti University of Applied Sciences and materials sensor equipment manufacturer Spectral Engines.

Schoeller introduces ProEarth biodegradable polyester

Swiss textile manufacturer Schoeller is introducing ProEearth, a collection of biodegradable polyester fabrics.

The new line, made from Bluesign-approved fabrics with biodegradable polyester, is part of its Schoeller FTC line, a joint venture between Schoeller Textil AG and the Taiwanese Formosa Taffeta Co. It will bow at Première Vision Paris this week and will then be shown at the Functional Fabric Fair in Portland, Ore., in October.

First traceable ocean plastic fabrics

Sustainable textiles company, Waste2wear, will present the world’s first collection of traceable recycled ocean plastic fabrics at international textile fair Première Vision Paris (September 17-19).

The used plastic comes from a small island near Shanghai where, in collaboration with NGO’s and the local government, Waste2wear created a business model in which former fishermen could recover lost income by fishing plastic from the ocean, known as the Ocean Plastic Project; they now collect more than 30 tonnes of waste from the ocean every month.
