US profits hurt by cheap foreign polyester

A major U.S. consumer of RPET enjoyed higher sales figures but suffered significantly lower net income last fiscal year. One reason was cheap polyester imports from China and India.

Unifi, which recycles PET into REPREVE brand fiber, reported sales of $708.8 million during the 2019 fiscal year (the year that ended June 30, 2019). When adjusting for foreign currency translation impacts, that was up 7.6% over the prior year, according to a press release.

Unifi, Inc. a speciality textured yarn supplier has come to an agreement with the owners of Complast S.A. and Technologia Textil Avanzada (TTA), by signing a non-binding letter of intent to form a joint venture in Guatemala. Both the companies in Guatemala are into recycling, spinning and texturing.

Under the terms of the deal, the joint venture will continue the recycling, spinning and texturing activities of Complast and TTA with Unifi owning 51% of the joint venture and the existing owners of Complast and TTA owning the remaining 49%.

Unifi, US based yarn manufacturer with support from Century Synthetic Fiber Corporation which has become a licensed manufacturer of Repreve, to expand the production of its Repreve recycled fibre into Vietnam.

Unifi, Inc through a new division in Sri Lanka, Unifi Textiles Colombo Private Limited (UTCL) based in Colombo will expand global availability of REPREVE recycled fiber and other Premier Value Added (PVA) yarn. The new expansion is expected to begin operations by the end of the third quarter in 2016.

The expansion comes on the heels of Unifi's announcement of new distribution channels in both Turkey and Taiwan, through KORTEKS and Sun Chemical, respectively.

Unifi, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, produces 300 million pounds of polyester and nylon yarn annually to be more innovative and a socially responsible company, Jay Hertwig, VP of global branding for textile maker Unifi said that Repreve was the answer. Unifi, a US synthetic yarn producer to expand production capacity of state of the art Repreve recycling center in Yadkinville. The recycled polyester brand, Repreve, will see 85,000 square feet added to its manufacturing facility – representing a more than doubling in size of the plant.

The expansion will increase capacity to produce Unifi’s recycled fibre brand, Repreve, and other premier value-added products (PVA) by up to 60 million pounds. The $10 million investment will add around 18-20 new jobs in the Yadkin County area in the future.
