Pakistan forms STPF to make a big push in exports to booming regions

The Pakistan Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan on the back of worrisome performance of the export sector has formed a three-year plan called "Strategic Trade Policy Framework (STPF) - 2015-18 to make a big push in exports particularly to the booming regions like Middle East Africa, South East Asia and China which has been okayed by the Cabinet Committee on Production and Exports.

India’s knitwear exports have declined with a market share of a meagre 0.3 per cent of the total knitwear products imported by Japan in 2014 in spite the fact that India enjoys duty free access to Japan.

Prashant Godghate, secretary general of Japan India Industry Promotion Association (JIIPA), said that if Indian knitwear exporters want to enter the Japanese market on a large scale, then they should improve the quality of their products and display sticking to delivery schedules. Also, they should come up with innovations in order to meet the preferences of Japan, he added.

Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) leaders expressed concerns over the proposed merger of textile ministry into commerce ministry and said that Pakistan has dynamic, vigorous and export-oriented textile industry that has an overwhelming impact on national economy.

Bangladesh Cotton Association (BCA) with the support and co-operation of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) is organizing a two day global summit and has invited buyers and seller to attend this international trade event to help support its textile and clothing exports.

Bangladesh, the world's second largest cotton importer and it imports more than 90 percent, or 5.5 million bales of cotton annually.

The textile and clothing sector accounted for $24 billion of Bangladesh's $25 billion of goods exports in the fiscal year to end-June 2014.

The government of Kyrgyzstan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop cooperation in the textile sector with India. The MoU was signed by India's Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar and the visiting Kyrgyzstan's Minister of Energy and Industry Kubanychbek Turdubaev in New Delhi.

The two countries have also agreed to set up a Joint Working Group to explore details of cooperation within the scope of the MoU and the steps required to facilitate bilateral trade and investment.

Mixed reactions coming in from the Pakistan textile industry on the announcement of its new textile policy 2014-19, according to Pakistan Apparel Forum’s Chairman Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, under the present economic circumstances no better policy could have been expected but stressed on implementing the policy in letter and spirit to get required targets.

He said that the new five-year policy would go a long way in benefiting the entire textile sector and boosting exports of value-added garments and apparel.

A weaker rupee and steady demand from China and US had helped the textiles exports in the past year. From April, demand for raw material like yarn from China has fallen dramatically and inventory levels have risen. Further, falling cotton ribre prices have been asserting pressure on yarn pricing and cutting unit value realisation, although rupee continues to remain weak.

The Secretary Ministry of Textile Industry (MINTEX) at the first meeting of Federal Textile Board held on Monday after its reconstitution in July 2014 chairing by Minister for Textile Industry Abbas Khan Afridi announced that the Pakistan’s textile policy would be presented in the next Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet meeting also restructuring of Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) was also on cards.
