Pakistan expecting increase in textile exports of $500m by June

Pakistan government is eyeing more than $500 million increase in textile exports in next three months after achieving a 6.2 percent increase on year-on-year in March worth $1.064 billion.

The recent increase in the textile sector after a long dip is due to the decrease in duties, said officials at the Ministry of Textiles. They have zeroed customs duty from 4 percent. Likewise, sales tax has been zeroed from 5 percent. They have introduced made-ups.

Despite the demonetization drive, which has affected the domestic and export industry sentiment, the Yarn Fabric & Accessories Trade Show; YFA 2016 which was held from November 23-26, 2016 in New Delhi, saw visitor numbers climbing 15 per cent over the previous edition to 8,598 buyers. A majority of the 148 exhibitors participating at the show also expressed satisfaction with the numbers as well as the quality of the buyers.

Cotton prices fall in Pakistan due to lack of buying interest

On Tuesday, cotton prices in Pakistan slid amid lackluster trade due to lack of buying interest from spinners and higher imports of cotton, whereas, cotton prices in the world markets moved higher.

The spot rate settled at PakRs5,500/maund (37.324 kilogram each), down PakRs50/maund from the previous level. Around 1400 bales of cotton were changed hand in the ready markets of Sindh and Punjab.

The Ethiopian Textile Industry Development Institute (EDITI) stated that the country’s textile exports for the first half of Ethiopian fiscal year 2015-16 are lagging behind the plan target.

The target was to achieve $60.07 million from textile exports, while only $41.1 million was attained, which is only 70% of the plan, said EDITI.

During the mid of last year, the government revealed ambitious plans to stimulate the sector by offering attractive incentives to investors.

The Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC) has welcomed the initiative taken by the Central Government to boost the exports of textiles made of Man-made fibres for B&C group of countries under the MEIS Scheme. In the original policy issued in April 2015 there was no incentive for export of such textiles for Africa and Latin American countries falling under the B&C category. While this will be a definite booster for increasing our export of textiles to non-conventional markets, few items have skipped the attention of the authorities.

During the inauguration of Intex South Asia International Apparel Fabrics and Accessories Exhibition at Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre yesterday, it was disclosed that Sri Lanka aims to be among the top 10 high quality supplier countries in the world by 2020.

Out of Sri Lanka’s total export earnings, 40% is contributed by the garment industry of the country.

In 2014, the total sector exports value was US$ 4.98 billion.

The chamber has stated that the estimated $500 billion potential consists of domestic sales of $315 billion and exports of $185 billion.
