China significantly reduces spun yarns import from India

India’s spun yarn exports in March 2017 declined 47.6 per cent in volume terms and fell 39.3 per cent in value terms. Spun yarn (all kinds) shipments were at 64.55 million kg worth US$198.6 million, implying per unit realization of US$3.08 per kg which rose US cents 13 from previous month and were up US cents 42 as compared to March 2016.

The deceleration in spun yarn exports of India slowed down in November 2016 having fallen 21 per cent in volume terms and 14 per cent in value terms. Spun yarn (all kinds) shipments were at 90.1 million kg worth US$261.1 million or INR1,733 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.90 per kg which was down US cents 11 from previous month and up US cents 24 as compared to November 2015.

After Vietnam relegating India to second since March this year, now Pakistan pips India to third position in supplying cotton yarn to China. India was until February, the top cotton yarn supplying nation to China. In August 2016, Pakistan overtook India by supplying 34 million kgs of cotton yarn while India could ship only 21 million kgs and Vietnam heading at 61 million kgs. Exactly a year ago, India had exported 66 million kgs with Vietnam at 45 million kg and Pakistan at 41 million kg.

India, which once led as a cotton yarn supplying nation to China is now been relinquished to second position. This was done by not so powerful as an economy or a textile giant, Vietnam. And this not the story of aberration, it has been the top supplier of cotton yarn to China since March 2016, when it overtook India. And that too, at a much higher unit price realization than India and also Pakistan, the lowest in the rung.

China, the top importer of cotton yarn from India, has significantly reduced its sourcing in recent past. However, India continues to be the major supplier of cotton yarn for China. China has simultaneously reduced yarn imports from the World over the past one year. In July, India’s cotton yarn exports to China plunged 75% year on year, both in terms of shipment and value. During the month, shipment was just 17 million kgs valued at US$285 million as against 66 million kgs worth US$1,118 million last year.

Spun yarn exports declined by 4.6 per cent in volume terms and 12.1 per cent in value terms in May 2016. Total shipments were at 101.5 million kg worth US$276.5 million or INR1,830 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.72 per kg which was up US cents 6 from previous month and down US cents 24 as compared to May 2015. In INR term, the FOB values per kg of yarn export was INR180 per kg. Fibre wise the FOB realization for cotton yarn was INR179 per kg, viscose yarn INR203 per kg, polyester yarn INR146 per kg, PC yarn INR177 per kg and PV yarn INR178 per kg.

Spun yarn exports in April 2016 jumped 12 per cent in volume terms and were up 1.7 per cent in value terms. Spun yarn (all kinds) shipments were at 112.2 million kg worth US$299 million or INR1,971 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.66 per kg.

Spun yarn exports from India were up 2 per cent in volume terms but down 8 per cent in value terms in January 2016. The marginal increase in volume reflect the weakening global demand while the decline in value is explained by falling FOB price and depreciating the INR. Total yarn shipments were at 103 million kg worth US$278.3 million or INR1,856 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.70 per kg, down US cents 30 from a year ago.

Spun yarn exports growth slowed down in October 2015 to just 4.1 per cent in volume terms in October 2015. In value terms, it declined 9.5 per cent. Spun yarn (all kinds) shipments were at 112 million kg worth US$310 million or INR2,007 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.78 per kg. This was US cents 4 down from previous month and down US cents 41 from October 2014. It was also the lowest since February 2015.

China continued to propel yarn export from India, although average unit value realization continued to decline hovering in the range of US$2.78-2.82 per kg on an average.

Spun yarn exports growth rate slowed down dramatically in September 2015 to 8 per cent in volume terms and 6 per cent in US$ term. All kinds of yarn shipments were at 118 million kg worth US$333 million or INR2,188 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.82 per kg. This was US cents 4 down from previous month and down US cents 42 from September 2014. It was also the lowest of many months. Meanwhile, the Rupee depreciated 5 per cent against the US$ in the comparable months.
