The exporters are not much optimistic about the implementation of the Rs180 bn export enhancement package announced by prime minister Nawaz Sharif in December. The package allowed the 4-7 pc rebate to textile exporters across the value chain rewarding value-addition. Besides, imports of cotton and machinery for the industry was also made duty-free to encourage investment for boosting exports.

Aptma Chairman Aamir Fayyaz made a detailed presentation on the existing state of affairs in the Punjab-based textile industry. He said the regional competitors were competing Pakistan ahead due to the timely interventions by their governments. The presentation also highlighted a huge difference in cost of production in Pakistan compared to the regional countries. He said the government should immediately address the energy cost issues by ensuring uniformity in prices, i.e., electricity at Rs7 per kWh and LNG at Rs600 per MMBTU.

Pakistan textile exports have been going up steadily, in the first five month (July to November) of the current fiscal year textile shipment jumped 7.66 percent year-on-year to $5.51 billion driven primarily by a surge in value added textile exports. This positive sign raises expectations that full-year proceeds likely to touch $13 billion after a hiatus of two years.

Pakistan textile exports recorded a 2.37% decline in July over the same month of the previous fiscal year and a month-on-month drop of 7.89% in July alone. PTEA to sign MoU with ILO to set up ILO-ILS textile programme

With an aim to improve the application of labour laws in Pakistan and ensure stability of the country’s exports to the global market, the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has designed an ILO-ILS Textile programme.
 
According to PTEA Chairman and Vice Chairman Sheikh Ilyas Mahmood, the programme has been set up in a way to further the agenda of ILO in Pakistan. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed between the two bodies this month.
