Bangladesh imports 49% cotton from India to meet its demand

India has become the single largest source of cotton import, the basic raw material for the textile industry for Bangladesh due to rapid shipment, better quality, price competitiveness and settlement of dispute in a relaxed manner, said BTMA President Tapan Choudhury.

According to the latest data from Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), Bangladesh imports 49% cotton from India to meet its demand. Last year, it imported 6.10 million bale cotton, of which 2.99 million bale or 49% came from India.

A business team comprising representatives from Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association and Bangladesh Cotton Association lead by Abdul Matlub Ahmad, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry visited the Indian state of Gujarat to select a garment warehousing site that will be constructed by Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to boost exports to India.

Bangladesh Cotton Association (BCA) with the support and co-operation of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) is organizing a two day global summit and has invited buyers and seller to attend this international trade event to help support its textile and clothing exports.

Bangladesh, the world's second largest cotton importer and it imports more than 90 percent, or 5.5 million bales of cotton annually.

The textile and clothing sector accounted for $24 billion of Bangladesh's $25 billion of goods exports in the fiscal year to end-June 2014.
