Pakistan’s textile exports have been tapering off for the last four years, but an incentive package valuing Rs 180 billion, comprising rebates and tax concessions announced in January last year, bucked up exporters to contend for increase their share in the markets around the world.The exports should be regularly subjected to audit from third party to ascertain the use of imported inputs after one year. The bureaucracy should remain out of this process. All documented imported inputs used by this sector should be allowed at zero duty and consumption verified through exports.

Pakistan exported textile and clothing products worth $8.8 billion during July-February period of the year 2017-18 as against $8.2 billion of the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Recording textile exports growth of 7.17 percent during eight months (July to February) of the ongoing financial year (2017-18).

The growth in textile and clothing products exports enhanced the country’s overall exports to $14.8 billion during July-February of 2017-18 as compared to $13.3 billion of the corresponding period of the last year.

Pakistan textile industry realized $2.18 billion from its exports in the first two months of the current fiscal year of 2017/18 compared to $2.06 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data. Textile exports increased 5.9 percent as the sector geared up efforts to meet government's exports increment target to qualify for incentives.

Pakistan in the first half of the current fiscal year despite an improvement in export earnings from value-added sector, witnessed decline in textile exports to $6.156 billion from $6.259 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data.

Pakistan textile sector exports registered 7.42 percent decline during the Fiscal Year 2015 16 in which raw cotton and cotton yarn remained the major contributor of decline in the textile exports as their exports witnessed decrease of 47.89 percent and 31.77 percent respectively, revealed Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data on Friday.

It may be recalled that cotton production in the country during last season declined sharply in Punjab due to unprecedented weather conditions.
