H&M and Ikea join to study recycled materials

The H&M Group and furniture giant Ikea have joined together to conduct a large-scale study of recycled textiles, as the companies announced at the 2019 Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference.

The two companies are currently reviewing chemical content in post-consumer textile recycling in a study that has been underway since May 2018.

H&M has been working towards a goal of increasing its use of recycled materials to become more circular, and therefore has an interest in understanding the chemical content of collected pre-owned textiles to ensure safe use of recycled materials.

Chemical Recycling Enables Production of Polyester Film Containing 70% Post-Consumer Recyclate.

The development of these films was made possible thanks to investments in chemical recycling. This technology uses post-consumer PET bottles. The bottle flakes are depolymerized to monomers and in the further polymerization transformed to PCR PET resins suitable for extrusion into BOPET films. This operation can be repeated indefinitely and the BOPET produced with this technology are suitable for direct food contact in accordance to USFDA and European legislation.

France, Sweden propose ban on over 1,000 allergens in textiles.

The joint initiative includes all substances classified as skin sensitisers under the CLP Regulation and 25 substances of the family of disperse dyes with sensitising properties.

Ahead of the proposal, the French Agency for Food, Environment and Occupational Health and Safety (Anses) conducted a study to identify substances present in certain articles. And the Swedish Chemicals Agency (Kemi) carried out an analysis of risk management options under REACH on skin sensitisers in textiles.

ExxonMobil said that it will fund the construction of a new polypropylene production unit in Baton Rouge that will expand production capacity along the Gulf Coast by up to 450,000 tons per year. Gulf Coast polypropylene capacity to increase by 450,000 tons per year; Expansion positions Baton Rouge chemical facility for further growth; and Construction begins in 2019; production startup in 2021. Construction will begin in 2019 and startup is anticipated by 2021. The project is expected to create up to 600 jobs during construction and 65 permanent jobs once completed.
