China has started showing interest in buying United States cotton, based on discussions during the April 12 meeting of the Plains Cotton Growers (PCG) Advisory Group.

There have been positive signals regarding movement of U.S. cotton to China in anticipation of a trade deal between China and the United States.
“Demand for cotton is there,” stated one merchant at the meeting.

While cotton growing and ginning is a top agricultural export industry in Tanzania, the sector has been struggling for the past 50 years. As a result, Tanzania’s half a million smallholder cotton farmers in the Lake Zone, the region southeast of Lake Victoria where most cotton is produced, remain impoverished. The poverty rate in Tanzania was 26.8 percent in 2016. Improving the Tanzanian economy, which relies on the cotton sector, is essential to further reduce the poverty rate and improving livelihoods.

Export of cotton textiles from the country to China rose over 68 per cent to hit $1.55 billion between April and February during the 2018-19 financial year, according to data available with the Cotton Textile Export Promotion Council.

Cotton Association of India (CAI) has released its March estimate of the cotton crop for the season 2018-9 beginning from 1st October 2018. The CAI has estimated cotton crop for 2018-19 at 321 lakh bales of 170 kgs each which is lower by 7 lakh bales than its previous estimate of 328 lakh bales made during last month.

The first woman to head one of Bangladesh’s biggest garment associations said on Tuesday she would boost female leadership as most factory workers were women, amid scrutiny over safety.

Rubana Huq, 55, is managing director of Mohammadi Group, which owns a string of factories supplying brands like H&M and Primark in Bangladesh, the world’s second largest garment exporter, employing 4 million people.

Prices have been reduced from Rs 930 for a 450-gram packet of cotton hybrid seeds five years ago to Rs 730 last year, leaving little differentiation between good and bad seeds.

The Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases (CCLS) on Friday approved import of bio-pesticide ‘Gossy­plure’ to help eradicate the population of pink bollworm that attacks cotton crop.

Punjab government and cotton growers had been urging for the bio-pesticide’s import which was barred due to some legal issues.

The CCLS approved the import of Gossyplure as a generic chemical under Form-16 of the Pakistan Agriculture Pesticide Act, 1971. Consequently, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) removed its impediment in import.
