Wrangler to use 100% sustainable cotton by 2025

Global jeans brand Wrangler has started its new The Wrangler Rooted Collection, a limited edition premium jeans capsule meant to support US sustainably grown cotton in five Southern states. Each piece–the Alabama Jean, the Georgia Jean, the North Carolina Jean, the Tennessee Jean and the Texas Jean–uses fabrics made with cotton grown, milled, then cut and sewn in the United States and treated with a unique wash, as well as trim and patch details featuring the state’s silhouette and other embellishments.

ZFU urges the goverment to pay in USD

The Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) is appealing to the government to peg cotton prices in United States dollars in order to cushion farmers against the reduction in RTGS dollar value.

Cotton prices have remained unchanged since the start of the selling season in May.

ZFU president, Paul Zakariya said cotton should be pegged in US dollars so that farmers are paid at the prevailing interbank market rate since RTGS$1.95/kg has become unsustainable.

Cotton Association of India (CAI) has released its March estimate of the cotton crop for the season 2018-9 beginning from 1st October 2018. The CAI has estimated cotton crop for 2018-19 at 321 lakh bales of 170 kgs each which is lower by 7 lakh bales than its previous estimate of 328 lakh bales made during last month.

The Government’s Presidential Free Cotton Inputs Scheme has helped the vulnerable marginalised farmers who have been suffering from the high cost of inputs and low producer prices at the same time getting their yields affected by the negative effects of climate change. The farmers have responded positively by “going back to the fields” and are producing cotton whose volume has been constantly growing. Malawi’s cotton production has gone down from 100,000 metric tons in 2012 to around 15,000 in 2017, to revive the industry which it says is at the verge of collapsing, the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) in Malawi has urged the government to make investment of US$4.8 million (about K3.5 billion) into cotton farming, said AICC Chief Executive Officer Felix Lombe on Wednesday in Mzuzu.

A centralized cotton buying system has been introduced by Zimbabwean cotton merchants to curb side marketing which has become rampant in the industry. Farmers has described the move as an attempt to promote monopolistic tendencies.

The Cotton Ginners' Association, which represents the merchants, is buying the crop on behalf of all ginners, except for China Cotton Africa, and the volumes are shared on a pro rata basis depending on level of investment in the production, industry players said.

Sluggish export demand and anticipated higher domestic production have resulted in rates falling below MSP in few states of India.
