The first woman to head one of Bangladesh’s biggest garment associations said on Tuesday she would boost female leadership as most factory workers were women, amid scrutiny over safety.

Rubana Huq, 55, is managing director of Mohammadi Group, which owns a string of factories supplying brands like H&M and Primark in Bangladesh, the world’s second largest garment exporter, employing 4 million people.

A Euro, which was commanding 85 in January 2014, gets only about 66 now is spoiling the export party in Tirupur.

Europe is the largest market for Tirupur's garments which accounts for about 48% of the exports from Tirupur, the US constitutes only 25% of the shipments from the knitwear town. A Euro has depreciated 14% against the rupee so far in 2015.

Northern Tosrifa Group’s unit Tosrifa Industries, a garment exporter located in Tongi in Gazipur, produces knitwear such as polo shirts, T-shirts and tank-tops plans to set up an eco-friendly dyeing unit by raising capital from the public, to become self-sufficient in fabric colouring and boost profitability.

The company also plans to expand its sewing capacity by adding some 500 sewing machines.

Indian garment exporters call for reduction in yarn prices

The increase in yarn prices has come as a blow for the knitwear sector and garment exporters, as it will be difficult for same to reach the target set. They have urged the Union Textile Minister K Sambasiva Rao to intervene in reduction of yarn prices raised by spinning mills.

Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) President A Shakthivel in a letter to Union Textile Minister K Sambasiva Rao said that despite appeals from the mills associations, spinning mills refused to concede their requests and justified the increase in yarn prices.
