First woman to head one of Bangladesh garment associations

The first woman to head one of Bangladesh’s biggest garment associations said on Tuesday she would boost female leadership as most factory workers were women, amid scrutiny over safety.

Rubana Huq, 55, is managing director of Mohammadi Group, which owns a string of factories supplying brands like H&M and Primark in Bangladesh, the world’s second largest garment exporter, employing 4 million people.

The Pakistan textile industry to see new avenues opening for them to collaborate with international buyers and leading brands as the International Apparel Federation (IAF) is planning to open its first regional office at the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Assoication (PRGMEA) House in Sialkot.

PRGMEA Central Chairman Ijaz Khokhar said that the IAF will address major issues being faced by the textile industry of Pakistan and bring those issues to limelight, including compliance, gender training and exchanges of delegations.

To boost compliance of Philippine garments and textile firms with international labor standards, a Joint Department Order (DO) was signed between the Department of Trade & Industry-Board of Investments (DTI-BOI) and the Department of Labor & Employment (DOLE) on 25 July 2017 for the guidelines for the issuance, suspension or revocation of certificates of accreditation for garments firms.

The Garments Manufacturer and Wholesalers Association (GMWA) has organized a three-day ‘Garment Fair’ which is also the consecutive 19th edition of the “Garments Fair Hyderabad which began from Sunday for Garment Manufacturers, Dealers and Retailers.

The event was inaugurated by S Niranjan Reddy, Telangana Planning Board Vice-Chairman and Somesh Kumar, Principal Secretary.

Indonesian textile and garment makers are pushing the government to join a greater economic partnership with European and Pacific Rim countries in order to boost the country’s exports by taking part in the two international trade pacts.

Anne Patricia Sutanto, deputy CEO of garment manufacturer PT Pan Brothers, said that she expected that that the government would stay committed to joining comprehensive partnerships with the EU and US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

CBN to revive Nigerian textile industry

In order to improve the economy of the country, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has proposed to provide financial help to textile industries in Nigeria.

Recently, a meeting with garment and textile makers was held by Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor, in Abuja.

He discussed on how to solve the issues which are hindering textile production and provide assistance in such issues.

He stated that garment and textile manufacturing industries create employment and contribute to the country's economy and therefore must be provided proper assistance to function properly.
