Australian fashion brands are becoming more transparent about how they make their clothes, but there is still much more to be done on workers’ rights, living wage and environmental impact.

That’s according to the findings in the latest Ethical Fashion report, published by Baptist World Aid, which surveyed more than 130 companies with 480 brands.

More than 116 million tonnes of waste clothes end up in the landfills every year. A sustainable manufacturer of functional fabrics, Singtex has developed Biotec series to tackle this issue. It reuses organic materials, such as coffee grounds, to make coffee oil membrane and castor beans to produce bio-nylon fabrics. These bio-based materials are said to replace more than 25% petroleum consumption during production and offer a better wearing experience.

The company has also joined forces with Flipkart to sell official FIFA fan-wear merchandise purely. A performance wear brand promoted by Paragon Apparels, Alcis said that it will manufacture 50 per cent of its apparel from recycled polyester, which is derived from plastic waste.

At MAGIC 2016, the world’s largest fashion exhibition held twice annually and attended by professionals from more than 80 countries. Nine Peruvian companies participated in the event. The most demanded Peruvian products were t-shirts, shirts for men, and woven garments for babies.

The majority of buyers who contacted Peruvian exporters were from Canada, United States, and Mexico.

The textile sector of Peru aims to increase their exports to the United States. In addition, they wish to position and strengthen their presence of cotton and alpaca industry in the US.
