Readymade garment exports go up in May

Export of readymade garments has increased 9.25% in April-May this year compared to the corresponding period last year.

“This is clearly because of the support announced by the government in March 2019 for garments and made-ups,” said Sanjay K. Jain, chairman, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry. The Centre announced a Scheme for Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) in March.

ZFU urges the goverment to pay in USD

The Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) is appealing to the government to peg cotton prices in United States dollars in order to cushion farmers against the reduction in RTGS dollar value.

Cotton prices have remained unchanged since the start of the selling season in May.

ZFU president, Paul Zakariya said cotton should be pegged in US dollars so that farmers are paid at the prevailing interbank market rate since RTGS$1.95/kg has become unsustainable.

China cotton association to request waiver from import tariffs on U.S

The China Cotton Association will submit an application on behalf of its members for a waiver on import duties on uncombed cotton from the United States, according to a statement on its website on Thursday.

The Ministry of Finance posted a list of goods, including cotton that has not been carded or combed, at the end of May that could be eligible for waivers on tariffs that China imposed in July on U.S. goods as part of the China-U.S. trade war.

Waiver applications need to be submitted by July 5.

Gap brands are committed to sourcing 100% sustainable cotton within the next six years, the apparel group announced in a press release. The flagship Gap brand committed to 100% sustainable cotton by 2021, Old Navy by 2022 and Banana Republic by 2023.

Gap's standard for what is sustainable includes cotton grown by methods approved by the Better Cotton Initiative, organic, recycled and verified American and Australian-grown cotton.

Teijin develops 100 percent recycled cotton-like polyester yarn

Teijin Frontier, the Teijin Group’s fibres and products converting company, has developed a new cotton-like high-performance polyester material for athleisure fashion.

The new material has been developed to combine the look and texture of cotton with superior properties for moisture absorption, quick drying and UV protection. Notably, the cotton-like features are achieved with polyester filament yarn, not a staple fibre. What’s more, Teijin Frontier’s new material is eco-friendly because it is made with recycled raw materials.

Cotton prices settled higher on Monday as the United States and Mexico, a major importer of US supplies, averted a trade dispute, while investors remained cautious ahead of a crucial monthly crop supply and demand report. Cotton contracts for July settled up 0.4 cent, or 0.61%, at 65.99 cents per lb. It traded within a range of 64.85 and 66.5 cents a lb. The front month contract snapped four straight sessions of losses, after shedding almost 3.7% last week.

India, which is emerging as a global textile hub with huge potential, needs to develop man-made fibre to remain competitive in the global market and it aims to be a $350 billion industry by 2025, industry officials June 6 said.

"It is high time that the industry changes its approach to move into the second growth phase and aim for exports of around $100 billion from the current $40 billion," Textiles Secretary Ajit B Chavan said at the CII Texexcel 2019, the National Textiles 4.0 Summit here.

Rain impacts cotton crop in Texas Panhandle

This year’s rain is creating problems for many cotton producers in the Texas Panhandle. The weather this year has brought more rain and when there’s too much rain in consecutive days it can damage cotton crops.

“Everything that can go wrong with too much rain has gone wrong,” said Jerrell Key, General Manager of Adobe Walls Gin LP.

Cotton Egypt Association Continues Its Campaign

COTTON Egypt Association, the organisation behind Egyptian Cotton™, has launched a further initiative to actively root out non-genuine goods from the supply chain.

The organization has begun naming and shaming manufacturers who fail their rigorous accreditation scheme through a new ‘Black List’ on their website.

They are also set to launch a worldwide task force of secret shoppers who will purchase products marked as Egyptian Cotton from retailers both instore and online, which will then be passed along for testing.
