Bangladeshi yarn makers hit as Indian cotton traders halt shipment

Bangladesh imports 46 percent of natural fibre from India spending about $3 billion a year for local consumption. With the sudden cancellation of shipment of 400,000 bales of cotton by Indian traders, after a rally in domestic prices and the rising rupee, the Bangladeshi yarn makers will be negatively affected which could deal a blow to apparel exports, said the industry insiders.

Abdul Hai Sarker, chairman of Purbani Group, said that their company imports 30,000 bales of cotton a year, 15 percent of which is from India.

Resumption of cotton import by Pakistan

Pakistan after suspending cotton import from India for few days has resumed cotton imports. With the resumption of cotton trade, India can now exporting its surplus cotton, while Pakistan will benefit from cheaper supplies from the neighboring country.

Last month Pakistan suspended cotton imports from India, saying shipments failed to fulfill phyto-sanitary certification, threatening the $822 million-a-year trade.

Bangladesh fails to gain duty-free access to Indian market due to non-tariff charges

Bangladesh garment industry although has duty-free access to the Indian market, it is unable to gain benefit from the facility due to non-tariff charges, said state minister for Textile and Jute Miza Azam after inaugurating a two-day Indian man-made textiles exhibition in the city.

Bangladesh has been suffering from inveterate trade deficit with India for decades and need to address the trade imbalance issue in a win-win situation.
