Bangladesh garment industry owners demand withdrawal of 0.7 percent source tax on export for at least two years to help them sail through choppy waters brought about by the uncertain global prospects and the need for remediation of structure .

Siddiqur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association at a pre-budget consultation meeting organised by the National Board of Revenue said that once the situation improves they will start paying the source tax again.

Bangladesh garment industry generated $28.09bn exports in the fiscal year 2015-16 which just ended, registering a 10.21% growth from the previous year. The data officially released yesterday showed that the earnings also exceeded the target of $27.37bn set for the year. Of the total figure, the knitwear constituted $13.35bn and woven products $14.74bn, according to Export Promotion Bureau data.

Bangladeshi exports have surged by 12.56 percent to $27.37 billion from a year earlier in the first 11 months of this financial year according to the Export Promotion Bureau. Garment exports increased nearly 15 percent to $22.2 billion in July-May. Boosted by strong clothing sales, Bangladeshi garment exports increased by 7.22 percent in May from a year earlier to $2.7 billion.
