GST shows new payment system for textile industry

Yarn dealers have stopped fresh deliveries of goods to power loom weavers because they are yet to settle outstanding payment. Most of the yarn dealers and fabrics traders have set payment terms where those paying within seven days of goods delivery are given one per cent discount on the total bill amount, whereas there are interest penalties of up to 18 per cent on late payments

The textile traders' community in the country’s largest man-made fabric (MMF) hub has been facing lot of difficulties on the GST portal due to technical glitches and sought extension of deadline in the online e-way bill generation. An e-way bill is required for movement of goods worth more than Rs 50,000.

Though the central government has launched the e-way bill generation on trial basis for the inter-state movement of goods above Rs 50,000 starting from January 16, the traders have demanded that implementation of e-way bill must be done only after ensuring the system works properly.

Textile traders across the city have sought total exemption from GST till 2019. The demand was submitted to the commercial tax commissioner, Dr P D Vaghela, on Wednesday.

According to Gaurang Bhagat, the president of Maskati Cloth Merchants Association, an awareness programmes about the GST are needed for textile traders. The traders should be prepared for the new tax before it is imposed.

He said that the commissioner has assured them that their case will be presented to the Union government.

Textile traders of the country's largest man-made fabric (MMF) hub Surat , have suffered losses to the tune of over Rs 200 crore over the last five days due to the ongoing Jat agitation in Haryana.

Textile traders and transporters are worried as more than 250 trucks loaded with textile goods which includes dress materials and saris worth crores of rupees bound to Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab have been stuck on the highway near Rajasthan following the Jat quota stir in Haryana, according to Industry sources.

The Walmart experts suggestion to transfer grey fabrics directly from powerloom weaving units to textile dyeing and printing mills in order to ease traffic congestion in the two square kilometre area on Ring Road has been disregarded by the member of Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA).

According to FOSTTA members, only 10 percent of the textile traders have their warehouses located in the peripherial areas of the city, while most of the small traders have no option but to stock the fabric in their shops and godowns in the markets.

After the huge success of International Textile Fair’s maiden edition, the second season of the two-day ITF kicked off on Sunday with a marked increase in European exhibitors. The ITF was inaugurated by Butti Saeed Al Ghandi, second vice chairman of the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The event began with 150 exhibitors from 20 countries. ITF is seeing the participation of apparel brands, local and international buyers, textile traders, fashion designers and design studios.

TS opts out from imposing VAT on textiles

The Telangana state government has decided to drop the proposal to impose Value Added Tax (VAT) on sarees and textile products, subsequent to its appeal, said the Telangana State Federation of Textile Associations (TSFTA) on Thursday.

Commercial Taxes Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav gave this assurance when a delegation from the Federation explained to him the problems that such a levy would result in, including harassment of traders, said TSFTA president Ammanabolu Prakash.
