Textile units pushing for marine discharge system

Most of the textile processing parks in the State likely to be hit by the Central government’s proposal of making zero liquid discharge system mandatory for textile units having waste water discharge more than 25 kld (kilo litres a day) as the owners find the cost of implementing zero liquid discharge systems high.

The Centre had issued a draft notification in this regard recently and sought views from the industry.

With Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board issuing notices to the scattered textile processing unit for polluting groundwater in the process of bleaching and dyeing due to which they are facing closure. Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) is going to facilitate a textile processing cluster near Kariyapatti in Virudhunagar district.

It will be the biggest cluster in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs. 250 crore.

The Central government’s move to set up a textile park in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Tirupur has been opposed by the Vellore Citizens Welfare Forum (VCWF) on the grounds that the cluster would worsen the already serious problem of pollution caused by the dyeing units in Tirupur.

363 unlicensed dyeing and printing units in Erode closed in last 3 years

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has so far managed to close and demolished 363 textile dyeing, printing and bleaching units functioning in Erode district that were running without any license during the last three years and the untreated waste water was being discharged in the water sources, this was informed by a senior official today.

The Federation of All Trade and Industries Association (FATIA) has urged the state government to take measure to safeguard the textile processing units from collapse, as textile sector ranks next only to agriculture in terms of employment generation.

They have expressed apprehensions over fructification of the proposal for establishing common effluent treatment plant worth Rs. 700 crore benefitting production units in Erode, Namakka, Karur and Salem districts.

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board authorities have dismantled five unauthorized textile dyeing units at Pallipalayam towns today which discharge effluents into water sources. Due to this people there are suffering without water and continuing pollution

Although Pallipalayam and Namakkal towns developed primarily because of the large number of power looms, handlooms and textile processing units such as dyeing units. But there are many unauthorized dyeing units.
