Cotton prices were stable on the market on Saturday amidst modest trading. The Karachi Cotton Association kept its spot rate unchanged at Rs8,200.

Cotton experts said a steady trend prevailed in the market as the cotton arrival which is improving with each passing day.

They said the quality of cotton from Sindh is attractive for mill owners. Phutti (seed cotton) from Sindh is priced higher by Rs100 and ranged Rs3,600-4,225 while Punjab variety is pegged at Rs3,550-4,150.

Prime Minister Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood has underlined the significance of investment opportunities in the textile sector for industrial development.

In a meeting with a Chinese delegation of the National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) on Tuesday, he urged the delegation to extend its cooperation in the textile sector. The two sides discussed bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

Encouraged by the government’s initiatives to help reduce the cost of energy for exporters, major Punjab-based textile groups on Friday announced that they plan to invest $1 billion in new value-added textile projects and capacity expansion for exports.

The group that plans to invest include leading textile manufacturers such as Sapphire, Suraj, Kamal, US Apparel, Interloop, Fazal Cloth Mills, Ejaz Group, Mahmood Textile, Ayesha Group, Bhanero Group, Kohinoor Mills and Sadaaqat Textile.

High demand for cotton in the domestic as well as international market has soared the happiness of cotton farmers of Saurashtra,the hub of cotton farming. Demand for cotton in Pakistan, China, Vietnam and Indonesia has gone up considerably, pushing the price of cotton by around Rs 400 per quintal in the last one week.

Against the MSP plus bonus price of Rs 954, cotton farmers are now getting Rs 1,100 per cotton bale in the market yards with commitments of around four lakh bales being placed.

Pakistan, the world’s fourth largest cotton producing country but interminable power and gas cuts have stopped exporters from producing their orders on time. Many have watched helplessly as their clients have instead turned to Vietnam or Bangladesh.

A third of the production capacity of the textile sector has disappeared, thousands of factories have closed, and most of the others are running below full capacity, said Rehan Bharara, a former loom owner who now runs a public infrastructure project for the textile industry.
