The ginning industry of India is staring at slowdown, on account of subdued demand and disparity in price. According to industry sources, ginning units are running below 65-70 per cent capacity. India's substantial cotton production this year has not translated into good days for ginning sector.

Moreover, farmers are reluctant to sell kapas (raw cotton) at the current prices in expectation of higher price for their produce, bringing down the commodity's arrival by 50 percent from last year.

Safil, Italy’s biggest worsted yarn plant for wool and wool blend yarns that produces 300 tonnes of mohair yarn each year, but 80 percent of the fibre comes from South Africa's Angora goat industry has shown its interest in buying more Australian mohair.

Company manager Cesare Savio said that if Australian growers can produce finer mohair, they will consider switching suppliers for its premium yarns.
At present, they buy about 5,000 tonnes of wool from Australia for their products, they will also buy mohair from Australia.

The Indian textile industry is facing hurdle on account of differential taxation, rising energy cost, lop-sided fibre and trade policy. And this is at a time when the global demand for fibre – both cotton and MMF (man-made fibre) is on the rise.

Stakeholders have sought a cut in the excise and import duty structure for synthetic fibre to deal with the trend. It wants the excise duty to be lowered from the prevailing 13 percent to 4 - 5 per cent and the import duty from 28 percent to 2 - 3 percent.

The Zambian women weavers began the week by participating in Origin Africa, the largest cotton, textile and apparel event on the continent, which aims to raise awareness of Africa as a business and sourcing destination in the sector. First round of negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement between Japan and Turkey started on Monday with the aim to further strengthen their economic cooperation.

Japan wants to quickly seal an agreement with Turkey after the country signed a free trade deal with South Korea last year that could undermine Japan’s competitiveness in exports.

The meeting, to be held over two days in Tokyo, follows an agreement reached in January between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, now Turkey’s president, to launch FTA negotiations this year.

Kolkata weavers to get credit card to avail loan up to Rs25000

The textiles department of West Bengal has begun a drive to distribute credit cards to weavers that will enable each of them to avail of a loan of up to Rs 25,000. The department is also setting up handloom circuits across the state to give specialized training to weavers and to market handloom products. The textile department after see the success rate of farmer credit card took the initiative to have a similar drive for the weavers.

Department officials have spoken with NABARD and another leading nationalized bank along with rural banks so that weavers can get loan.
