In the midst of the U.S.-China trade dispute, hundreds of Chinese companies will be making their way to Toronto later this month, ready to do business with Canadians. They will be participating in Canada’s largest apparel and textile trade show, Apparel Textile Sourcing Canada (ATSC), August 20-22, at the Toronto International Centre. Keynote speakers at the event are some of North America’s leading apparel and textile industry experts, ready to hone in on what the U.S.-China trade issues mean for Canadians and potential repercussions for the sector. The Sudanese government and Chinese companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allowing the latter to grow one million feddans of cotton in Sudan. The feddan is a unit of area equivalent to 1.038 acres (0.42 ha). This was disclosed by the speaker of Gazira state Legislative Council.

On Wednesday, speaker of the Gazira state Legislative Council Jalal Min Allah Gibril said that the Chinese companies would cultivate 450,000 feddans in his state besides building textile and ready-made clothing factories.

The international business news is once again dominated by Chinese companies' overseas investment and expansion plans. Chinese textiles group Ningbo Shantex Co Ltd which manufactures and exports textile accessories likely to make a takeover bid for United Kingdom-based apparel chain Phase Eight.

Shantex is already in preliminary talks with Towerbrook, a private equity company that bought Phase Eight in 2011. Phase Eight was established in 1979 by Patsy Seddon in London to offer fashionable clothing to sophisticated young suburban mothers.

Chinese Cos duped by North Korean textile manufacturers used as a production base

The North Korean manufacturers are known as toll processors and use specialized equipment to produce export bound apparel for the Chinese companies, which supply the raw material. These contracted manufacturers have been found selling some of their finished products at bargain prices in the tightly-controlled country's black market, according to sources inside and outside North Korea.

Apparel such as coats are sold by the manufacturers without the knowledge of the Chinese companies and made from raw material skimmed off from the companies.
