The cotton market in Pakistan on Tuesday witnessed fair trading activity on Tuesday. According to floor brokers, slump in cotton yarn market coupled with falling trend in world markets is keeping pre¬ssure on lint prices.

Other major factors affecting cotton prices are higher arrivals of phutti (seed cotton) but slow off-take of cotton from spinners and exporters.

Textiles have been a small part of the Kenyan economy, but the sector has the potential for growth, according to Adan Mohamed, industrialization minister. The government is trying to entice textile manufacturers with a hefty new subsidy, this year slashing the cost of power from Ks18 ($0.20) a kilowatt hour to Ks9.

Mohamed believes the sector can create 300,000 jobs if the country can only give it the fillip it needs to grab a larger slice of the global clothing market , estimated by the International Textile Manufacturers Federation to amount to $1.5 trillion.

Farmers from across Saurashtra held a mega rally on Monday under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) demanding higher minimum support price (MSP) for cotton. BKS has demanded MSP of Rs 1,000 per 20kg of cotton from the government.

The farmer leaders said that the policy of the present government will destroy agriculture and force farmers to take up other means of livelihood.

BKS, an affiliate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has decided to intensify the agitation if the demands of the farmers are not met in the next fortnight.

Minister of State for Agriculture Mohanbhai Kundaria said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that prices of cotton are below MSP in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra in the current cotton season 2014-15.

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) will procure cotton from farmers in 11 producing states as the rates have fallen below the minimum support price (MSP) in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra, Parliament was informed today.
