'Harsh' tactics used on the Vietnamese garment workers to keep wages low

European and U.S. fashion brands sourcing from Vietnam must stop their “harsh” tactics that push down workers’ wages and trap millions in poverty, labour rights campaigners said on Thursday.

Vietnam, which is one of the world’s largest garment manufacturers and supplies fashion chains such as Zara and H&M, is home to over 6,000 garment and textile factories that employ about 3 million people, government figures showed.

Pakistan Ministry of Textiles is seeking funding for eight new projects in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) budget for the 2015-16. Faisalabad Garment city is another project which would be discussed in CDWP, as it is a textile infrastructure project whereby state of the art infrastructure would be developed . The cost of the project is estimated to be Rs.598.500 million.

According to the documents the ministry claims that this project would help garments manufacturers in boosting value addition to textile related exports.

Pan Brothers, a publicly listed garment manufacturer of a number of world famous brands is all set for a massive three year expansion to help the company tap the potential of Southeast Asia’s emerging garment markets.

Pan Brothers manufactures brands like Nike, North Face, Lacoste and Emporio Armani and exports 99 percent of its sales. The company’s biggest export market is Asia, which gets 39 percent of total sales, followed by the United States and Europe with 30 percent each.

Spinners, garment manufacturers strongly discord over duty on yarn imports

The Pakistan spinners and garments manufacturers both having strong line of reasoning to support their positions over the duty on yarn imports the ministry is left to find a solution somewhere in the middle to protect the interests of both.

Aptma’s recent demand for withdrawal of the duty exemption on India’s yarn to restrict its imports after New Delhi announced the 4pc rebate on its exports after the EU grant Pakistan GSP+ status. Former Aptma-Punjab chairman Shahzad Ali Khan said that the rebate on its yarn exports means that India will become much cheaper than them.
