The Department of Rural Industries, Government of Chhattisgarh, is going to provide skill up-gradation training to silk weavers at four block handloom silk clusters- Baloda, Navagarh, Dabra and Babnidih in Janjgir-Champa district, to promote handloom silk industry, said Deputy Director of Directorate of Rural Industries Chhattisgarh A Ayaz.

The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India has sanctioned six handloom clusters for the state.

Union Textiles Minister, Santosh Kumar Gangwar who is also the Chairman of All India Handloom Board speaking at the first meeting of the recently constituted All India Handloom Board was held in New Delhi, on 19th April said that the Government is committed to develop and promote handloom sector. He gave an overview of the various initiatives being taken by the Government for the development of the sector.

Government to promote handloom and indigenous textile industry and to stay in the competitive global market has taken a well planned marketing strategy, which is important apart from other essential prerequisite. There is hope among the weaver community on the steps taken by the government but there is still lot more to be done in order to improve both our social status and product demand.

The textiles department of West Bengal has begun a drive to distribute credit cards to weavers that will enable each of them to avail of a loan of up to Rs 25,000. The department is also setting up handloom circuits across the state to give specialized training to weavers and to market handloom products. The textile department after see the success rate of farmer credit card took the initiative to have a similar drive for the weavers.

Department officials have spoken with NABARD and another leading nationalized bank along with rural banks so that weavers can get loan.
