Iran hotspot for Indian cotton exporters

Cotton exports to Iran reported a phenomenal jump of 1070 per cent to 1.85 million kg during 2018-19.

Amid slowing raw cotton exports in recent months, India has seen sharp jump in cotton demand from an unexpected buyer, Iran. After many Western nations imposed trade sanctions on it, Iran’s cotton purchases from India has gone up multiple times in recent months.

Going by the DGFT data, India exported 15,877 kg raw cotton (HS Code 52010015 of staple length 28.5 mm and above but below 34.5 mm) during the year 2017-18.

Iran aims to be self-sufficiency in cotton production by 2025

According to Ebrahim Hezarjaribi, the executive of the Cotton Project at the Ministry of Agriculture, Iran’s annual cotton production will reach 386,000 tons by 2025, making the country self-sufficient in using the material in the textile industry.

Last Iranian year (ended March 20), the country’ self-sustainment coefficient stood at about 45%, he said, adding that figure in envisaged to reach 58% this year.

According to him, the cotton sowing area is expected to reach 82,000 hectares this year.

It is expected that 228,000 tons of cotton will be harvested this year, he added.

Iran boosting garments output, exports

In an interview by Tasnim news agency, Abolqasem Shirazi also announced about exports of garments to Afghanistan, Iraq, Russia and Yemen.

Increasing non-oil exports to the neighboring countries is one of the major plans that Iranian government is pursuing in the current year.

Iran shares border with fifteen countries, namely the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Oman, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.

Iran is heavily dependent on imports to meet the domestic cotton demand, which is a strategic and all purpose product in Iranian textile industry. Iran imported over 56,517 tons of cotton worth $103 million during the 11 months to Feb 19. Uzbekistan was the biggest exporter.

Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Adam Mohamed during a meeting with Iranian minister of Trade and Mining Mohammed Reza who is in Kenya seeking investment opportunity said that Kenya is particularly leveraging on Iran’s expertise in the textile and oil and gas sectors to develop strong local industries and seeks to enrich trade ties between the two countries.

The meeting is a follow-up of a memorandum of cooperation signed between the two countries during the 10th ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization.

India exported a total of 2.56 million kgs of polyester spun yarn to 47 countries in November 2015 totaling US$5.73 million, out of which 16.8 percent was shipped by Turkey. The unit price realization was averaging US$2.24 per kg down by US cents 39 a kg and in value terms it was also 9.7 percent down as compared to November 2014.

In November, thirteen new destinations were found for polyester yarn of which, Nigeria, Ecuador, Cote D'Ivoire, Togo and Mauritania were the major ones.

Iran fronts the export market for its hand-woven carpets

Iran is the leading exporter of hand-woven carpets. Persian rugs are highly in demand for their intricate design and skilled craftsmanship. Iran has exported 80 percent of its hand-woven carpets to the international markets, Director of Coordination Department of Carpet Management Organization Lotfi Afshar said.

He pointed out that Hand-woven carpet is an absolute advantage (for Iran) and this is the only good in the world led by Iran. Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of the Persian culture and art, and dates back to ancient Persia.
