One year after the global trade wars ignited, thousands of representatives from the Canadian apparel and textile industry – from designers and brands, to retailers, e-commerce sellers, importers and buying offices – were out in full force at the fourth annual Apparel Textile Sourcing Canada (ATSC) show in Toronto last week in search of trade policy updates, future market directions, and new opportunities for international trade and sustainable global sourcing.

With Canada’s apparel market forecast to be worth almost 39 billion Canadian (29.66 billion U.S.) dollars by 2020 — a 20 percent increase from 2016 — representatives from more than 20 countries will convene in Toronto next month at the Apparel Textile Sourcing Canada (ATSC) 2019 show to present international trade opportunities to the booming Canadian apparel sector.

Clothing rental options are evolving from one-off, special occasion outfits to subscriptions for everyday apparel, and a Canadian company is expanding its closet to get in on the trend.

Rent Frock Repeat is relaunching this fall as a monthly clothing subscription service, after eight years in the designer dress rental business.

"[The customers are] the ones that set this in motion, because the demand was there," said Kristy Wieber, president of Rent Frock Repeat.

Toronto and Montreal, April 16, 2019 — With pre-registration numbers already exceeding forecasts, Apparel Textile Sourcing Canada (ATSC) — which takes place August 19-21 in Toronto and August 23 in Montreal — is on track for another series of record-breaking shows in 2019, show organizers have announced.

Canada, one of the major export destinations for Bangladeshi manufacturers, witness drop in garment shipment in the first half of this fiscal year by 7 percent to $437.78 million. The decline is due to global slump in demand for apparel, said Faruque Hassan, vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Expor-ters Association.

In recent years, Bangladesh's competitors like India, Vietnam, Cambodia and Sri Lanka have managed to increase their shipments to Canada, which might be another reason for the decline, Hassan said.

In recent years, the US textile and clothing exports have been growing at a steady pace. A big leap in US textile exports was seen from January to April 2014, during this period they exported textile and apparel worth US$7.857B, growth rate of 2.64 percent year-on-year. Mexico and Canada were to two countries who consumed bulk of textile and apparel exports made by the US.
